Looks like the Braves are finally getting their act together. They’ve won 9 of 11 on this road trip, and have cut your lead by 6 games in the past 10 days or so.
The Braves bats are waking up. Even with Smoltz going back to the DL, Our pitching is as strong as ever. Odalis Perez finally looks like he’s back for good, following his surgery (8 scorless innings, 3 hits last night). John Burkett is the MAN this year. John Cracker – err, Rocker is leading the NL in saves. Mike Remlinger is establishing himself as on of the best setup men in the bigs. And, of course Maddux is leading the NL in ERA.
Right now your lead is 2 and 1/2 games. I see that you’ve lost 7 of 10! What’s wrong? We’re coming to your house to play in 12 days. You suckers gettin worried? See you soon!
Oh yeah, I almost forgot – here’s a big

for all you Mets fans and your team. 10 games out? .438 winning pct? heeheheheh. See you fools next year!
You can never know our (Phillies fans’) pain. Never! Actually, Cubs & Red Sox fans may have it worse. Of course, maybe the Cubbies can hang on in this surprising season.
Ah well, it’s not like we ever expected the Phillies to be in first at this point in the season. Not a very assuring start for the Braves.
So, which (perceived) underdog should I root for if the Phils phade phast? I’m thinking the Twins…
I should’ve known you’d do this, mouthbreather. I guess the Pirates aren’t in contention (much less the same league, except in name), so you have to start a new thread instead of taunting us in the perfectly fine existing thread about the Phirst Place Phillies.
What’s wrong? Same thing that’s been wrong all year, no one’s hitting.
Well, I was, and I did (sort of, a long time ago).
I grew up liking the Pirates as a youngin, but truthfully, I really stopped caring about baseball for a long time (early 80s to mid 90s, Including when the Pirates were in the NLCS in 91 and 92) and when I moved to Atlanta (1996) I caught Braves fever and rediscovered my love of baseball. You can call it turncoating, but I don’t thing so. I really couldn’t have called myself a Pirates fan since elementary school. I respect their history and Clemente will forever be my all time favorite player, but if I was still in Pittsburgh I’m sure I would not even be a baseball fan these days. I owe that to Atlanta.
I was just at the Braves/Pirates double header a couple Sundays ago in PNC Park in Pittsburgh, and I think I almost got thrown out for being too loud a Braves fan. So make no mistake about it – I wish no ill will to the Pirates, and they have a beautiful new park, and I love the city of Pittsburgh, and I’ll be a Steeler/Penguin fan until I die, but now I am unquestionably a Braves fan.
And you’re right, I probably should have just tacked this into that other thread – Oops.
Don’t feel bad, mouthbreather. I think this is a perfectly legitimate thread!
Well, it’s great that they lasted to the third week in June - whoda thunk THAT, huh? But don’t count them out yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that the Phils this season are a lot more resilient and crafty than teams of yesteryear, like 2000.
Hey, we had that other thread boasting about the team’s success - it’s only fair that when they start to slide, another thread pops up.
Randy Lerch? Is that the best you can do? You had to go back to the late 70s - early 80s for something on us? Hehehe…
You gotta wonder about any team that has a third baseman who - as a grownup man - insists on being called “Chipper”… I mean geez, it’s usually the other way around; boy has dorky nickname as a youngster, changes to “normal” adult name when he’s old enough. Not the other way around. Sounds like your boy forgot yer s’posed to chew that tobaccky, not swallow it.
That would be the 1999 NL MVP Larry. (An award your team hasn’t seen in 15 years, BTW)
Make fun of his name all you want. It’s really old hat by now. What everyone seems to be missing is that it was getting his goat the first few times he heard it in Shea in 1999. Now that every cleetus in America knows to chant “Larry”, at every plate appearance he has on the road since then (Let’s see, thats probably 500-700 times since then)…it’s kind of lost any sting it might have once had.
But you guys are right. He DOES have a funny name.
Last 4 years average stats per year (going back to Roland’s first Full season)
Now, take those numbers you provided and bear in mind SR plays most of his games (ok, half) on the undeniably crappy playing surface at the Vet. Ok, so maybe it’s a tad better this season, but for most of the time he’s been there it’s been very hard to play on. When the new stadium is built, it’ll have (I think) either a grass or nearly grass surface, which should lessen his wear and tear. Your boy Larry plays on a comparitively nice field.
Still, I think SR will level out to a 30-120-.300 hitter, with a Gold Glove potential each season.
Hey, Be happy I got it that close. You can’t expect me to remember all the B-level players, can you?
Oh, boo-hoo! If only my guy played in a T-Ball park, he could break the home run record! It’s not fair!
The turf helps him as a hitter as much as it casues wear and tear on him in the field. He’ll be healthier (slightly) at the plate, hitting in a less hitter-friendly park. I’d be surprised to see any noticable difference in his stats.
I think I may either grow wings and fly away, or need some oxygen from laughing so hard.
The 1st Place Twins play the Cubbies June 15 - 16 - 17 in a WORLD SERIES PREVIEW. Following that, they take a day off and then go into Cleveland for three days.
And, just a word to the Indians fans…“Payroll? We don’t need no stinkin’ payroll!”
I don’t see why not. I remember all the Braves’ names!
Well, see what happens is his body’s so broken in the field that when he gets up to the plate, he’s too tired to homer, as he surely could.
And when ya do, you can take your misguided optimism with you!
BTW, remember the last time the Phils and Braves met in the postseason? Good. History might repeat itself this fall.
[I didn’t point out your “mane” - “name” error, because I want you to get used to errors, as you’ll see many of them over the next few years there in ATL.]
For starters, BobbySuezQ, Welcome to the boards. Can’t ever have too many Braves fans 'round here.
Now onto this…
Thank you for proving my point.
No, I don’t remember that far back. When was it that Philly was last in the Playoffs? Oh yeah, 8 years ago? Hang on to those glory days, my man. Hang on dearly. We’ve won the NL pennant thrice since then.
I might buy that. But I think closer to the truth would be that you are so used to seeing mistakes in Philadelphia that you didn’t even notice it!
