I’m surprised there isn’t a thread yet, since I waited nearly a week to watch the pilot. Did nobody bother watching this but me?
Anyway, I wasn’t blown away but it has potential. I’m in danger of falling in love with Amber Heard; I thought she was great – absolutely beautiful and real acting chops to boot. I also liked the overall ambiance of the show, the visual style and pacing and such.
But I’m not crazy about the story itself so far. I think it would have been interesting enough to present a somewhat realistic look at what things were like behind the scenes at the Playboy Club. Instead, before even the first commercial break we get a bunny accidentally killing the head of the Chicago mafia (on her first day!) and dumping the body with the help of a suave DA candidate with a shady past. Just way too much silly melodrama, when surely there could be plenty of good stories to be told without such over-the-top pulp crime novel stuff.
If they back off of that a bit and focus on the lives and relationships of the Club’s employees and patrons, this show could be really interesting. We shall see.
The show got a few mentions in the “New TV Season” thread but nothing very complimentary.
Repeating what I said there, I only saw a few minutes but it was some guy who walks into an office and places a $10 and a car key on the desk and then sits to light a cigarette before talking. That guy so desperately wanted to be Jon Hamm in his mannerisms/expressions/voice that I felt bad for him and eventually left the room out of sympathy (my wife was watching the show).
When she pulled it out, I said “That only works in cartoons, sweetheart.”
I still like this show, but I agree with Wheelz that it would have been cool to see a realistic look at the behind the scenes stuff as told by bunnies. Sure there could still be that mob story line, but include some true-life stories and whatnot. I’m sure there’s a goldmine of interesting things that happened at the Club and Mansion back in the day.
