Yes, there’s a super gourmet line of burger places out here “The Counter” where you build your own, and there’s a lot of stuff like that. Of course, the burgers aren’t cheap, either.
Flakey Jake’s was like that, though I wouldn’t call them ‘super gourmet’. Good burgers though, and you could basically build it yourself. You got the basic burger, and then there was a ‘salad bar’ where you could put stuff on it. (I liked mayo and dijon mustard, plus lettuce and pickles.) And they were inexpensive.
I think they’re all gone now.
DQ needs to bring back German chocolate flavored blizzards. Unfortunately they only seem to have candy bar flavors like Oreo and Heath these days.
Although it’s available in March, McDonalds needs to make the Shamrock flavored milkshake year round. It’s a green colored shake with a strong mint flavor. The funny thing is all other McDonalds shakes, although they’re made on the same equipment, taste far more watery.
The original Shamrock Shake wasn’t flavored; it was just a vanilla shake colored green.
Even at the time (when I was a kid), my family knew there was something wrong with this, and we’d add mint flavoring to the Shamrock Shakes we’d get.
Ted’s Montana Grill used to have a Prime Rib French Dip sandwich au jus on their regular menu that was tres yum, and one day it disappeared. You can still get one, IF they have any (made from the previous day’s left-over prime rib) but you have to ask the server, and they don’t have them often, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. Every time we go in, they tell us that they get scads and oodles of requests for it, but right now corporate has no interest in putting it back on the regular menu.
Bastiges.
That reminds me, a long time ago McDonald’s would offer a peppermint sundae in the wintertime. It was the usual vanilla soft serve but with a thick, red peppermint sauce. I miss those.
Maybe it’s uncommon - that would explain the lack of info at the company site…
Joe
Not a ‘put it back on’ but just a simple ‘put it on’ request - in New Zealand, KFC do ‘Works’ burgers (available as a Works burger or Zinger Works burger) which adds ham and pineapple to the Chicken Fillet burger. Doesn’t seem to be offered in the UK.
And the Cajun simmer sauce, too! Made some damn fine jambalaya.
Kentucky Fried Ribs - I still have an occasional urge for them and it’s been over 20 years. These were real ribs - not the boneless stuff they’ve sold recently. Soooo good and soooo gone.
Do they still offer green shakes around St. Patrick’s Day?
I actually used to make those when I worked there. It wasn’t a special batter, it just didn’t stick to the mushrooms as well as the other food items. It was simple, seasoned flour, egg wash, seasoned flour, then fry. I still make them at home on occasion.
Interresting you should mention about the leftovers thing. My dad and his golfing buddies often go out to lunch at Joe’s Crab Shack. He told me once that there was something fantastic on the menu (I really can’t remember what- seafood isn’t my thing) that they asked about the next time, as it wasn’t there. They were told that the restaurant often gets ‘test items’ on the menu, but that one didn’t do particularly well. All was not lost, however; all the ingredients to make said dish were still readilly available, as they were used in other things. My dad and his buddies still get the fantastic menu item on occasion when they go back to Joe’s.
Moral: If you don’t see it, ask. It’s possible it’s still make-able. Little to lose by checking.
My favorite dish at the Cheesecake Factory was the open-faced turkey sandwich. It was on really thick and tasty bread, and smothered in awesome gravy, which was also great for dipping the french fries in. Had it many times over a couple years, thenpoof gone.
I still weep for that sandwich. Damn you, Cheesecake Factory!!!
Yep, they still sell Shamrock Shakes in season. My birthday’s March 16, so I make it a tradition to buy myself one as a birthday present every year.
They still have them, but the name has changed to Arctic Rush.
Things I miss:
DQ: Brownie batter Blizzard.
Applebees: Apple chimi-cheesecake. It was the only thing worth going to Applebees for.
Subway: Ciabatta bread. I now buy my own ciabatta bread and make sandwiches with it at home.
Perkins: Chef bread bowl salad.
Dairy Queen, at least around me, no longer has Dilly Bars. Fools.
However, my Taco Bell has chili cheese burritos on the menu again after a 8 year hiatus or so. They’re just as delicious and gooey as ever.
That reminds me, I’m going to Taco Bell right now before they take the Bacon Club Chalupa off the menu again. Those things are outstanding.
Why, oh why, did Hardee’s take roast-beef sandwiches off the menu?
Sometimes you can’t find an Arby’s, you know.
The Bacon Club Chalupa is so good.
My local TB had them for a couple of months and then poof gone and I was all le’ :(.
Then magically a couple of weeks ago I decided to go to TB, because I hadn’t been in a while, and it was there again. And I was :).
I have a feeling it will not be there for long and I will be again.
The only reason I’d go to Fazoli’s is for their Pizza Submarino, the best combination of spices I can find on basically a pizza sub. But other than for one special offer a couple years ago, no luck.
