I don’t know why I never heard of this before. Wolf Blitzer mentioned this story on CNN, and I found it on this CBS site, as well as many others.

Apparently, at a state dinner in 1976, President Ford asked the visiting Queen Elizabeth to dance. As soon as they began, the clueless Marine Band struck up “The Lady is a Tramp.”

I hope the Obamas didn’t put that song on the Queen’s iPod. :smiley:

I hope they did, along with “Closer” by NIN and the whole discography of Anal Cunt.

I’d heard about it, but only because of Don Novello’s “Lazlo Toth” letters. After this incident, he wrote to the queen, defending the song choice as an American classic while offering an alternative version of the song that he’d written (entitled “The Lady is a Queen”).
