This is a long shot, but I’m wondering if anyone can help me ID a song. In 1987, Hallmark produced a made-for-TV version of the Secret Garden. There’s a scene in which Mr. Craven is in his library, and a haunting piano piece plays in the background. I’m 90% sure it’s by Sergei Rachmaninov (or Rachmaninoff), but I don’t know the title of the piece. It’s probably a sonata or a prelude. I’m not even sure what key it’s in (probably G minor or C minor.)
I’ve tried searching through YouTube videos of Rachmaninov pieces, but I can’t find it.
I realize that not many people may have seen this version of the Secret Garden, but I figure it couldn’t hurt to ask.
I know it would be impossible to guess which of Rachmaninov’s hundreds of pieces it was; I was hoping someone had seen the movie and would remember which song it was. But probably it’s too obscure
Can you give us some more info about the scene? Is someone playing the song on the piano, or is it just background music? Is it source music, coming from a radio? Which library scene is it; towards the beginning or end of the movie?
If it’s in the movie, there’s a chance (albeit a slight one) that it’s in the original stage production as well, and I have the score to that. I can check it, with more information.
It’s background music, so I would be shocked if it were in the original stage production. It’s not part of the story at all; no one’s playing the piano. I only have the vaguest recollection of the scene; I think it’s more towards the beginning. (Could I get any more vague? Sorry.)
By the way, you’re probably wondering why I didn’t just look up the soundtrack for the movie. The problem is, I can’t find a soundtrack for it–there’s one for the 1993 (?) version, but no soundtrack is listed online for the 1987 made-for-TV version, as far as I can tell. I spent hours searching
Looks like pretty much the whole thing is on YouTube. Just go there and search for “Hallmark Secret Garden”. Find the scene, link it here, find answer.
Ah, sorry, I assumed the other “Suggestions” were all from the same movie. I don’t know, man… I guess you could email the guy who put the 2-minute thing on there and see if he has the whole thing, maybe?
That’s not Rachmaninoff, it’s by the Irish/Norwegian duo “Secret Garden,” and its full title is indeed “Song from a Secret Garden,” off their album, Songs from a Secret Garden.
Personally I preferred it when it was called Faure’s Pavane No. 50, but hey. (Actually the Secret Garden song is very pretty. It’s just I’m more familiar with the Faure, and that one really grabs me – and I wouldn’t be surprised if the duo heard the Faure and were influenced in some way.)
I have a VHS tape of that version of The Secret Garden and I was all set to pull it out and help you but I just realized I have no VCR. I’m glad you found the answer, anyway!
