I know in Southern California, every once in a while, we need to be reminded that there is this thing called rain and it is kind nifty and cool and cleansing at first, but eventually it is annoying and in large quantities hazardous. But seriously, I got it, I get it, I am getting it, so feel free, whomever is responible to turn of the rain. It’s re-Goddamn-diculous now. The point has been made. To whomever is responsible, it is time to move on, please restore the sunny skies and the cool breezes. Thank you.
[obligatory Nelson Muntz]Ha ha![/Nelson Muntz]
That sucks, man. I’ll try to send a bit of sunshine down your way from Toronto.
Second that…
8" of standing water outside my apartment yesterday, and no way around it - I had go splish-splash through it.
…and to think I had actually complained, not long ago, about day-after-day perfect weather being boring…
A-fucking-men.
I think by the time everything blows out of here, there aren’t going to be any trees left along the sides of the highways. Every day there is a new downed tree surrounded by cones.
And the streets in Mission Valley? What a mess. Hell, the streets everywhere are now so pot-holed it’s disgusting.
I know that OTHER places deal with this all the time. And guess what? Your lives are set up to deal with it. This is out of the ordinary for us, and it just seems we’re not equipped to handle it. SO YES GODDAMN IT WE’RE GONNA COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!!!
Grah, I have the rain angries today. I just for once would like to go out for a run and not have to worry about whether I’m going to get rained on.
It has been rainy/windy for several weeks here in the Bay Area. In fact I don’t think I remember seeing the sun for quite some time now, and it’s a little depressing.
It rains infrequently around here enough for me to look up with curiosity and think, “What is this water stuff that is falling out of the sky?” Additionally, my testicle chill threshold (the temperature at which I am figuratively freezing my balls off) is fairly high compared to other people/geographic locations- anything below 50 degrees farenheit is balls-freezing weather for me.
The meterologists say it is a combination of an Alaskan wind (god damn it Alaska, I thought you were nice. Why are you farting all over California?) and the “Pineapple express” from Hawaii- blatant false advertisement because there’s hardly anything pineapple-ley about getting MORE rain
I like rain, the pattering sound and pleasant scent. It reminds me of the home country (Ohio). But this Wrath-of-God incessant deluge has gone too far.
My commute time is 30-45 minutes longer. And this morning I-405 was completely flooded out. Estimated time to drain–not until the rains stop, probably Wednesday. So I’ll be crawling through half-flooded surface streets now. Did I mention the random traffic signals blinking red or even dead? Nice to have six-lane wide intersections as virtual free-for-alls.
And my phone line has gone out, too much water leaking into the network boxes. They say they’ll have it fixed by Friday. And of course, that means my DSL is out too, so no internet. At least we still have electricity, although the water seeping in from behind the light switches is not encouraging.
Damn, Incubus, you stole my line!
Holy cow. What part of the 405? When I was commuting in LA that was my main artery.
Not only rain but wind, thunder & lightning, and even tornados! Yes, TORNADOS! Probably nothing compared to the Midwest, but it’s quite unusual for here.
I like watching the East Coast networks (CNN, et al) when the rest of the country is having decent weather and California’s raining cats and dogs. They always look so…smug.
Oh, and I replaced the wiper blades on my car last week…they’ve been worn out for years, but normally I don’t think about replacing them until April, when of course it’s not even worth it. They work great but they SQUEAK like crazy…is that normal? I must admit I have no idea what new wiper blades are supposed to sound like.
And I heard only two lanes were closed on northbound 405 going up Sepulveda Pass. The traffic copter shot showed a complete parking lot in both directions…not that that’s unusual from the norm.
About a month ago I was gloating in a bad weather thread about the great So. Cal. climate. The gods apparently didn’t appreciate that. I guess I’m to blame for this endleess rain. Sorry guys.
::off to google for ark blueprints::
Seems like a good place to post a related rantlet about umbrellas.
I long ago decided that the small collapsible ones are about as good as paper cocktail umbrellas when it comes to protecting you against a real downpour. So I went to the bigger ones. But why are the big umbrellas so awkward to carry around? Why don’t they have a strap or hook so you can just loop it around your arm? I’ve never seen one that does.
By “bigger” umbrellas I’m referring to the large golf-style bumbershoots.
On the plus side, I’m saving money by not having to run my sprinklers this week.
“You shall take with you of every clean animal by sevens, a male and his female; and of the animals that are not clean two, a male and his female; also of the birds of the sky…”
Sorry…just catching up on my reading…
rjung, it’s also nice not to have to spend money on car washes.
Though the insides of the windows and the carpets are getting a little bit dirty.
Only one lane of I-405 northbound is open going past the Getty. So it was a parking lot, even though it’s normally ok going north in the morning. Southbound was a also a parking lot, just because of the rain and water slowing everyone down. BTW, this was at 6am when traffic is usually going 50 mph.
:: preparing necessary rituals to sacrifice to the Rain Gods (eyes Yookeroo) ::
The rain wasn’t so bad a few weeks ago, but this is ridiculous! Too much all at once, it’s making a mess of everything, I can’t take a walk, the car and the garage have that dank, musty funk going on, and I can’t fall asleep listening to rain pounding on everything.
And I used to like rain.
Some of the dry lake beds out here in the Mojave Desert are becoming seasonal lakes over the last few years. The Mojave River (which is usually a dry stream bed has become a raging torrent 200 yards wide when it reaches the I-15 in Victorville. It then flows through Barstow and out through Afton Canyon and into the Mojave River Wash and could possibly spill over (unlikely though) to Soda Dry Lake near Baker. Historical evidence shows that flooding rains from the northern side of the San Bernardino Mountains can flood into Soda Lake and merge with Silver Lake and then overflow into to Salt Creek to the Amargosa River to Badwater in Death Valley. I’d love to see that.
Mess around with TerraServer and check it out if your inclined.
The wash is nice, but the drying leaves a lot to be desired…
