The Rap Appreciation Thread

I enjoy rap music. Especially when I’m in a pumped, rarin’-to-go mood. But also, just in general. The heavy bass gets me going, I like the beats, and I admire the talent. (yes, it is a talent…}

I particularly like Wyclef, Eve, DMX, De La Soul, Biggie, Dr. Dre, and Xzibit.

So, who else is a fan?

Rap circa 1980s until about the time Biggie died was great. Today’s rap is absolute garbage, with the exception of Redman and Methodman and Eminem.

Hiphop is where its at nowadays. Talib Kweli & Mos Def (Blackstar), Common, Pharoahe Monch / Organized Chaos, Phife Dawg (QTip is garbage.)

In terms of non-current artists: Tupac, Biggie, Big L (really good, very few have heard him though), Lost Boyz, Eazy E (all of which are now dead sadly), A Tribe Called Quest (QTip when he was good plus Phife!)

Ahh…Phife Dawg. Why was QTip always the more popular of the two? Phife’s delivery was so much crisper.

Count me among the fans. I’m not an active listener, but it pisses me off how much people crap on rap. There ought to be a combination Rap and Country Appreciation Thread, as these are the two forms of popular music most maligned by people otherwise claiming to be musically open-minded…

Both rap and country have the same problem, which is that what is heard on the radio are the worst examples. In both cases, the good stuff is very un-commercial. Jurrasic Five and Union Station are just to musically intricate to be appreciated on the radio.
