mhendo, I’m going to take that $13 you mentioned and use it to drink myself into a stupor in the safety of my own home.
What a bunch of fuddy duddys.
I’m not going to see the movie, but I don’t have a problem with it. The handful of spring breaks I attended (early eighties), from what I remember of them, were lots of fun, maybe a bit less organized and contrived then what they appear to be now, but fun none the less. Good memories.
I detect some jealousy here, from the pocket protector crowd.
“Rated ‘R’ for sexuality, nudity, strong language, and partying.” I wonder if my current life would still be rated R, if I only qualify for three out of four.
Jealousy? Of their money and massive amounts of free time, yes. “Pocket-protector crowd”?
If you’re referring to those who have posted in this thread, that’s pretty insulting.
What GH said. “Pocket-protector”??? I see, so only the geeks could react like that, right? Because, it’s not like people could not be poor, or already have family/work obligations, or be in a non-geek but demanding field of study, or just not believe in drunken assholery as a fun way to spend the prime of their life. It must be the jealous pocket-protector geeks, resenting the cool kids. No other answer
Well, I was going to bash ChuckForbin too, but Gorgon Heap and JRDelirious got here before me.
Fucking pocket protector crowd, indeed. Don’t forget about the really thick glasses with the tape on.
I went to Ft. Lauderdale, Cancun, and Panama City Beach my soph, junior, and senior years in college for spring break. My parents paid nothing for the trips (I worked during summer and during school to pay for such endeavors). I got really drunk, acted like a jackass, and had sexual relations with girls whose names I never learned. It was a great time. Case closed, losers. Why don’t you go cry about it to your Congressman.
I think this movie will be an overhyped flop, but I take offense at people who are not in support of fun.
Well I suppose I’ve been put in my place then, eh?
I actually do like to get stupid drunk, stay up til 5 a.m. and be a jackass, and do so nearly every weekend.
But some people have other things to worry about, and I for one don’t appreciate your showing up just to be an ass, WS.
This is the pit. WS can show up anytime he wants, asshole or not.
I’ll retract the pocket protector comment, it wasn’t really applicable. I was going by the assumption that those here who seem to have a problem about spring break made conscious decisions not to attend (certainly the OP has a problem at least with what goes on in the movie), and that was the stereotype I happened onto. My mistake. Upon rereading the thread, it’s not a “nerds vs cool kids” thing, it’s really a class warfare thing.
So let’s replace my poorly chosen stereotype with your much more accurate assessment of the typical spring breaker - “Daddy’s wallet”, “overprivilged idiots”, “Fucking Rich Kids”.
Yeah, that’s better.
Shrug. It sounds like a mindblowingly stupid film, but I don’t have to see it. I don’t get the vitriol, especially the comments directed against “fucking rich kids” with “massive amounts of money and free time.” A week off and a few hundred bucks isn’t that hard to pull together – I’ve done it more than once while working my way through grad school (granted, I like to think I’ve chosen more interesting places than Cancun, but to each his own). Doesn’t mean they’re all rich, overprivileged, or irresponsible by any means.
Gorgon–
I went to Jamaica and Cancun on different spring breaks. I paid for it myself, and it didn’t affect my grades at all. I was certainly not an “overprivileged idiot,” and neither were my friends I went with. What’s wrong with some college students letting off steam?
It’s not the kind of vacation I’d take now, but it was a blast then. There are plenty of people who work through college and save up for the spring break trip. I don’t think it’s a big deal.
I’m with Indy, Gorgon. You simply aren’t right about kids that go on spring break.
But that is what they’re showcasing with this POS. They get a bunch of upper middle-class college kids, and show them ‘getting real’ on MTV’s dime.
Look, I have no problem with people going on vacation and enjoying themselves. I have a slight problem with people using their parents’ money to go on vacation and act like a jackass, but it’s not my place to tell others how to waste their money. But I sure as fuck have a problem with MTV and other guardians of pop culture telling me with every breath that this is what I should be doing.
As for not being right about kids who go on spring break, perhaps not. But in my experience, Gorgon Heap is generally correct about it being a rich kid thing. Obviously, applying the general rule to specific cases doesn’t work too well (witness Indygrrl et al). Do we have any demographic information about spring break participants? I would be interested in seeing it.
Hmm, I guess I don’t really see where they are telling people this is what they should be doing. Actually, it seems embarassing for the people who end up getting videotaped. Thank God there was no Girls Gone Wild when I was in college or I’d have been in some trouble.
Ok, carrot and I are on the opposite view here, and while some of you say you have done these things in the past, nobody I have ever personally known has had the money (time perhaps) to go on one of these amazing spring break vacations that we see on TV.
If you think I’m bad with the vitriol-spewing, my wife is even worse.
The closest thing we have ever come to that was from NC to Toronto, by car, and that was our honeymoon using money we got for our wedding. We find it utterly incomprehensible to have the cash necessary todo what these kids are doing, and she has been far too busy doing work for college to do so even if we could afford it.
Fine. I have a skewed perspective. But it is one that is shared by everyone both in my family and that I went to school with. It simply isn’t a realistic thing to do for anyone I know or have known.
My friends all worked in bars through college, so money wasn’t really a problem. You can go on spring break for about $1000 including hotel, airfare, and spending money. You’re not going to be able to stay at a dream resort for that amount, but you can find somewhere decent. Actually, the place we stayed in Cancun was pretty spectacular for what we paid. If you book a few months in advance, it’s possible.
Most college students don’t spend their spring break in the freakin’ library.
Just because NOBODY you’ve ever known has taken a spring break, doesn’t mean that those who say we have are lying.
I’ve never been on one of those “woo-hoo spring BREAAAAAK!!” spring breaks, but I don’t begrudge anyone else a good time. Gordon, sounds like you’re just jealous, to me. Are these kids hurting you in any way? Yeah, the good majority of them are acting like idiots. So what? If you’re going to act like an idiot, I’d say college is the prime time to do so. Live it up. I think making a movie out of it is stupid as hell, and you’d have to drag me there kicking and screaming, but the whole idea of “spring break” has become a sort of institution in college. If you can’t afford it (I never could) then too bad for you. That sucks. Doesn’t mean you have to insult and sterotype the ones who can. All it does is make you look bitter as all hell…
You’re expecting class from the same studio that brought you Joe’s Apartment?
Shame on you.
So don’t see the fucking movie, what’s the big deal?.
Fine. Jealousy is a disgusting thing. Am I not supposed to be pissed be I am apparently poor?
Indygrrl*, my car isn’t worth $1,000. Saying “only $1,000” doesn’t seem to mean the same thing to us.
Be pissed all you want, at yourself. Is anyone making you poor? Is anyone taking away your opprotunities to not be poor? Certainly these college students aren’t. Your anger seems to be very much misdirected. Some people have it easier than others, that’s a fact of life. Getting all bent out of shape about it only serves to make you a bitter, bitter person. I haven’t had it easy and I’m light years away from being rich. I can barely afford groceries at times. But getting all pissed off at people that can afford the things I can’t isn’t going to help any, it’s just going to make me more unhappy. I have to concentrate on getting to the point I want to get to. No one is going to get me there but me. Such is life, you know?
