What are your views on religion? I’m tired of Churches interpretations to appease those that fund there missions… Those who say sex is not a sin… those who call grape juice wine… the relentless mass of morons who believe themselves to be Christians because they go to church… yet never witness themselves or read the Bible and decide what it means to them self. Those who don’t believe their daily activities are not sin.
No… I’m not a Christian… why? I can’t pay the tab or walk the walk… I don’t go to church because I hate the hypocrites that do… My mother comes to mind on this one. I can’t even bring myself to call my Grandmother anymore because she so firmly thinks she’s had conversations with God and seen angles and given prophecies.
I will not go to “singles church groups” because it’s so obvious that it’s not about God but meeting a girl at church. I’m not religious livestock.
My ex-girlfriend’s little sister the other day told me that Jesus… was married! and had kids! They’re Catholic… They say it’s written in books located in whatever that city is in Italy that houses the Pope… That they are not to be read because it disvalues the oath that the nuns and monks take and therefore kept secret.
I’m tired of people like Benny Henn who gets away with murder every day.
If anybody who even looks religious or family asks me about church, I simply lie to them to keep the peace. I’m so tired of their holier than thou attitude on everything… like they’ve got a corn cob up their ass.
Now… having said that… I’m obviously stirring up a gigantic nest of vipers… but hey, I’m behind my computer right now and I want to hear the interpretation you believe… the one you LIVE BY. I would not have posted this if I did not need to hear your view so flame away… just bare in mind it more than likely will not change my mind… They say that politics and religion are never to be brought up in regular conversation… well, I don’t think of this as regular conversation… but as a means to change your mind about what you’ve been spoon feed your entire lives. I’m asking you to step outside of the box for a second and take my point of view in to consideration, and understand why I think the way I do. Your problems with religions are more than welcome here as well… whatever religion that may be… of course… Christianity, in a global perspective is a small belief… so what are some oddities about your religion(s)?
On a more serious note, a question for the OP: Do you believe Christianity in its true form deems sex to be sinful? Do you have a cite for that?
Also, you say that you’re not a Christian, but you seem to be very perturbed by the “sinfulness” of mainstream Christianity. Are you one of those “non-religious” people who has a “personal relationship with Christ”?
(No offense intended; I’ve just been puzzled lately that many people who put their faith in Jesus of Nazareth claim not to be Christians, and I’m wondering if you’re one of them.)
My views on religion are “I’m glad I don’t have one so I don’t need to worry about this kind of thing.”
I’ll say something else, just in the name of stirring things up and making sure this gets moved to GD.
I think some of the Christians living today (in general, the ones you’re complaining about, Thaidog, who don’t accept orthodoxy just because it’s orthodoxy, apply what I’d consider common sense and value other people higher than documents of an ancient and very flawed culture) - those are the real Christians. The best ones who’ve lived so far, anyway. The original ones 2000 years ago had no problem with slavery, subjugating women, stoning people to death for minor offenses, etc. Not people I’d have over to dinner. The ones today have scrapped some of the stupidity in favor of valuing people and peace and love, which in my opinion are actually worthwhile. I’m glad they seem to be increasing in number, since they’re actually able to adapt to and appreciate the world today.
Thaidog, it looks to me like you are judging Christianity by the Christians instead of by Christ.
By the way, the Bible does not address whether or not Jesus was married, so IMHO it is just as foolish to insist he wasn’t as it is to insist he was. God simply chose not to let us be privy to Jesus’s life from age 12 to 33 for whatever reason.
Probably saving it for an expose or a tell-all book. Or perhaps he was negotiating the movie rights for the action movie franchise Young Jesus[sup]TM[/sup].
I know it can be difficult, but it is important to separate ‘religion’ from ‘the church’ to make any judgments. Churches are as much about fellowship and a sense of belonging to a community as they are about preaching the word of God. That is not necessarily a bad thing…on the contrary, in this world of social isolation and loss of a fundamental ‘meaning’ that many people experience, belonging to a church can be a saviour!! You haven’t found that, but the millions who do involve themselves are testimony to at least some value they have.
In other words, your disenchantment with ‘the church’ (whatever that church might be) and some churchgoers should not be confused with a wholesale disregard for Christianity (or religion in general). If you have theological issues to discuss, then maybe a question in GD or GQ aimed at some of our more biblically-literate folk might be in order.
Oh, and for the record, I’m still perched somewhat precariously on the agnostic fence, so I don’t exactly have a horse in this race…just in case you wanted to harangue me for defending the activities of the church.
I’m not perturbed by the sinfulness of mainstream christians… but what they have been taught… that it’s ok to be sinful as long as you ask forgiveness for it… NO! You clearly die for your sins. This is the correct teaching (note: No I don’t belive in this… but that’s my difference… I know that it’s all wrong and therefore don’t tolerate any of it)

Yes… all sex is sin… I’ll have to go home for a cite… but it’s all in the New Testament and it does not take much to uncover if you read for yourself and try to understand it… I encourage EVERYONE here who reads my post to read the Bible and see for thamselves… not blinded by the interprectations of there Sunday school class.
It’s funny I hate the wannabee christians for being so blind and the real truth for being up in there faces day after day and them never seeing it for themselves. So I don;t hate mainstream yuppie christians for the fact that they try… if they do, but because they are so smart at everything else, why not this?

So ultimately, if I understand, your problem is that you feel Christians (of which you are not one) don’t live up to the values they claim to profess (which you don’t agree with?), and futz with their teachings (which you don’t believe in). Why is that such a big deal?
No. Christ did not die for you so you could go out night after night and kill people or steal or get drunk with your friends for you to simply say: don’t worry Christ’s got the tab!!! THATS JUST IT. I would not go as far as to say FOOLISH. Every Protestant preach I’ve ever asked told me Jesus was single and that’s a lot. But there’s the point. Interpretation will kill you! If these books are true, then it’s all a lie.
You know what happened the last time I went to Church? My Sunday teacher asked me if 'd give him the name of my cousin so he could ask her out! That was funny. She was dating a guy who has going to the Citadel at the time. (now married to) The next day, he came back to me and said “why did you not tell me she had a boyfriend?” I felt like saying: you of all people in my Sunday school class should know the answer to that question teach! Church is not a place for you to hit on my cousin. This much should be self evident. Man!
