The Republicans are finally trying to win over the female vote.

Those two statements are synonymous. If the accusations of the Democrats were correct, then they’d understand the meaning of the terms. Sexism is pertinent to the thread, I attempting to be as terse as possible.

I’ve attended a lot of female-prominent medical conventions. Several of them featured pampering/glamorizing booths. It was lovely getting a foot massage, a mini-facial, or some hair & make-up tips in between boring speeches. And the problem is what exactly?

That they don’t have conventions for minimum-wage workers?

How do you know the wages and earnings of the female delegates who attended this convention? And the female delegates who attend next week’s convention?

I think that both sexes would probably benefit from a foot massage, and I also think that if men could get over the girly factor, they might benefit from a mini-facial and/or some grooming tips. Sisters, let’s let men know that massages can be wonderful! And that combovers don’t fool anyone!

Exactly !

PS:

I can’t even convince my husband to get a massage, much less a facial.
When I ask him about it, he goes and fills my gas tank, and I shut-up.

Did you marry him with the face he already had? Did he marry you because of your, ah, massage skills?

A public service add for the victims of ape, legitimate rape of course.

He has a face like Walter Matthau. Adorable.

“Until a man is married, he isn’t complete. Once he gets married, then he is finished.”

  • Sza Sza Gabor

It’s hard to discuss the finer points of a presentation with a clay masque on your face. Not being as successful as I have no doubt you are*, I would be looking for tips on new industry standards in my field, rather than hair and make-ups.
(* That is not supposed to sound facetious; I don’t know if it came across right …)

It’s not 100% proven by that statement, but it’s pretty damn likely. How many times do you comment on a male politician’s appearance or attractiveness compared to a female politician’s?

Many people will deny that things like the following are sexist.

  • snarking on Hillary Clinton wearing pant suits.

  • commenting that a female politician looks “haggard” way more than they do for a male politician.

  • comments or questions about a FP’s hairstyle, makeup or jewelry.

  • criticism if a FP isn’t wearing makeup.

  • calling FPs “behemoths”, ugly hags or the like.

  • thinking any of the above is somehow relevant WRT a female politician when it clearly is irrelevant WRT a male politician.

Hey, Omg a Black Conservative might be mean, sexist, and willfully ignorant… but that user name makes me laugh every time.

Oh, I dunno. OMG is kind of right. If this “Woman Up” thing is sponsored by some independent organization and not the RNC, it’s hard to blame them for it.

I think it’s silly, but not worth getting too worked up about, and it doesn’t really matter to me if it was the RNC or just random Republican group sponsoring it. It might be seen as symbolic of the Republican party’s fierce devotion to traditional gender roles, but… at the end of the day, we’ve still got women without reproductive care struggling for equal representation, and I’m more pissed off about that stuff than anything else.

ETA: But I do recognize the intrinsic absurdity of this somehow being a way to reach out to women voters… reminds me of when Ann Romney said she had strong ties to the Latino community because she’d been to Puerto Rico. Sure you do, dear.

How DARE you put basic mockery aside! Cecil Adams built The Straight Dope on basic mockery and we at the SDMB are pledged to uphold that tradition of nearly forty years. If you are not willing to indulge in basic mockery freely and at any opportunity I cannot see why you would wish to remain. Go find some polite message board, like one for crocheting baby booties. There is no place for Canadian attitudes**** here.

Why wouldn’t it? You just said we SHOULD set up a makeup booth for women because our women are ugly. You just admitted that you value women for how pleasing they look to you.

Telling women they have to “woman up” to be valuable, when woman up is clearly designed as being make-up related is sexist.

You almost had a point, but then you go and squander it by not knowing what words mean. Why do you repeatedly do this? Why in the world don’t you deconstruct what you say before you say it, since you know we will do it to you, since you have clearly labeled yourself as an enemy of the general bent of this board?

I mean, you’re actually right–this is a non-story. It’s just a silly fluff piece about how out of touch Republicans are in what women want. It’s silly that they think they are appealing to women by setting up booths that repeat the same message that women are already rejecting.

But every time you have a point, you have to ruin it with your stupidity.

I mis-wrote. The Young Guns Network is by the House Republicans and Woman Up is from the Young Guns Network. So, yes I did confuse the RNC and the House Republicans. I couldn’t find any reference to either as a PAC?

Og knows what Republican women want. Clearly they’re a few bats short of a belfry if they stick with the Party in the face of the political positions that are so hostile to women’s rights.

It’s obvious. They stay for the free beauty tips.
