It seemed to me that it takes 5 - 8 seconds to load a page after the mouse-click. It always says this at the bottom of the IE browser “connect: boards.straightdope.com contacted, waiting for reply…” That’s not good! Too slow! And I am losing patient fast.
Is this due to the traffic or the site servers that had configuration problems?
Admins need to do something about it, or you guys will lose members soon for sure.
A couple of points: First, 5-8 seconds is actually pretty good for this board. I hope you’re not discouraged from participating here, when you see what it’s like when it’s really bad. Second, the administrators are, in fact, already doing all that they can about it, and it doesn’t look likely that we’ll lose too many posters, anyway. If we did, then the problems would improve, since they’re mostly caused by this site’s popularity, in the first place. What you’d end up with is a sort of equilibrium situation where just as many people are on the server as are willing to put up with the slowness, which is essentially what we already have.
I would take 5-8 seconds of the mouse click any day. Five minute mouse clicks are not uncommon around here, and many times it just locks up completely. I only get through about 1/3 of the time. If it takes much more than 20 seconds between clicks, I just go to other cites that don’t have near the problems that this one does. It’s not worth the hassle to deal with on a daily basis. I have no idea how many posters have managed thousands of posts. Nevertheless, it’s a great cite that’s worth checking out on occasion when you can get through. I don’t see how the slowness of this cite can totally be related to its success though. Others have about half as many members as SD, and I’ve never experienced the slow down problem at all on theirs. Just the occasionall technical problems, but nothing that doesn’t get resolved fairly quickly.
We’ve heard rumblings that a new solution is in the offing. I hope so, as I’m near to the definition of a crazy person - i.e., repeating the same behavior in hope of a different outcome. I now gain access to a thread about one out of twenty tries.
If you are a real die hard and don’t have a big pipe… just keep it up in a different browser window and when it finally gets round to your turn, post. Then go to the next one of interest. People with real jobs, lives and a dial-up who post frequently have an inside track with Gawd… No other explanation makes any sense.
I would think there are very few regular posters who use a dial up unless they have the SDMB up all day everyday and twice on Sunday…
YMMV
I know that from AR at 250 KBS I can get usable results only after midnight local = CST.
Can’t keep up with much even then. Posting rate board wide is too fast to read even if a person could.
Just do the best ya can and enjoy what ya get. Prolly more than ya deserve.
IMO

Naw, this site is way too fast. I think it should be slower. I mean, who really wants to post 2, maybe 3 times a day. That’s way too often. One post a day is all anyone really needs around here. Heck, read one thread a day and you should be happy.
[/sarcasm off]
verybdog, try reading before complaining. We’re all going through this, and the admins are well aware of the problem, and there’s no easy solution.
I use dial-up (at home, exclusively now), but did a lot of my posting from work before. Also, over 1000 of my posts were accumulated prior to the board slowdown. A lot of people are in that position of having posted a whole lot before it got so hard to post.
