The Riches 26 Mar '07 (spoilers)

How does Wayne know who Sulla was, but not that Catholic priests generally don’t marry? :dubious: And I can tell that Dahlia might not like the idea of sending her kids to school, but she’ll be damned if any school tells are her kids aren’t good enough  .

Due to an annoying washing machine emergency, I missed the first 30 minutes of this tonight, and unlike everyone else in the civilized world, I do not own a Tivo or DVR or whatever. I came in as they were first entering the Rosemere school.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Dahlia’s handling of Sam’s gender-identity issues. And the flat tire scene? That kid’s a pretty good actor.

I love this show. I was annoyed at the whole “fake lawyer” thing, but now I love how they’re handling it.

Some random thoughts:

  1. My crush on Didi grows stronger with each new episode.

  2. Seconded on Dahlia’s talk with Sam, LifeOnWry. It’s impressive how a family with no signs of regard for the rules handles its own affairs with virtually none of the accepted social programming that’s touted by “cultured America”.

  3. Wayne’s first-day legal team pep talk had me giggling. Each episode so far has had at least one tribute to Izzard’s pure stream-of-consciousness style of absurdity, and they’ve had me all smiles. This is the closest I’ve gotten to my wish for new standup material from Eddie in years.

  4. I think they really want us to hate Dale. Not sure, but it might have something to do with his love for beating women. Just a guess at this point.

  5. A little public afternoon delight (in the driver’s seat of a brand new AMG S65) is something I need to try one day … particularly now that the weather’s good for it.

K, since I missed the first 30 minutes, can anyone fill me in on the Catholic priest thing, and also, how did Dale get Tammy to set Cael up?

Crap! I forgot it was on.

I haven’t watched the whole ep yet but I saw the priest part. They were applying for Social Security cards. Wayne was dressed as a priest, and their story was that they had been missionaries and the kids were born in Indonesia. They even had phony birth certificates. The SSA clerk asked Wayne if he was a “Catholic priest”. He hesitated for a second, looked at the wife and kids and said yes. The clerk looked skeptical and started asking the kids some questions, whereupon they jabbered loudly in several different madeup languages.

It was funny.

Is anyone but me just waiting for this thing to turn really dark? I mean, they aren’t afraid to show sex and violence, but I’m really starting to like these people and don’t want to see them getting hurt.

The potential to have it go real bad real fast is there. If I wanted to watch cliffhanger type series, I’d go watch 24.

Minor complaint: Why would you read Shakespeare in French when you can read it in English? If the writers wanted to demonstrate that Sam was well-read and spoke French, he could’ve quoted Proust, Camus, Rousseau and an endless list of other prolific French writers. But no, he had to quote an English author translated to French. :dubious:

No, I’m starting to feel the same way. I thought for sure the teenaged boy was going to be kidnapped by Dale, but I guess Dale is waiting to follow him back to where they are living. I just keep telling myself, it would be a really short series if something really bad happened this early on.

To which Dahlia responded, “Pad thai!”

I think the week’s episode is replayed on Saturday night.

I love Eddie Izzard and the show is definitely starting to grow on me. One minor complaint, though, is his atrocious American accent. I can suspend disbelief, however, by telling myself that it’s a mish-mash of accents he picked up while on the road.

Can’t complain too much about Minnie Driver’s southern accent, though.

I’m not sure, but didn’t he just translate the quote that was engraved on the wall of the prep school? In other words, he was just a quick study and was faking a fluency in French.

It’s a huge step forward from the American accent he repeatedly (nay, intentionally) butchered during his standup routines. It’s not perfect, but that’s part of what makes it so funny.

Sam doesn’t speak French - he “secret squirreled” a french book and picked up enough to fake it for the headmaster.

I’m guessing that it is being intentionally explained by his character being a “half breed” that was an outsider from the traveler community who married Dahlia. It looks like a show that is going to trickle in teaser bits about everyone’s past.

I’m just waiting for an easter egg of someone saying “The monkey is on the table.”

Oooh. My bad.

My guess on this is that his mom was born into the Traveler clan, but fell in love with a Buffer, left the clan and married him, and had Wayne. Wayne says to Dahlia that he went to school until 7th grade. I’m guessing at that point his mother decided she wanted to go back to her family and took Wayne with her. That’s how he met Dahlia.

No, he said “To be or not to be; that is the question” in french.

No, no, no. The mouse is *under *the table, the cat is on the chair, and the monkey is on the branch.

Cheeky monkey.
