Is anyone watching? What do people think? Come on, there can’t be just me who watched the first episode?
I love John Goodman as Eli, and Adam Devine as the youngest son but the other characters are not grabbing me… yet.

I tuned in mostly for Goodman and a little for Devine. I’d heard of Danny McBride, but until this show sent me to IMDb I couldn’t tell you what else he’d been in. I didn’t know he was the writer until the end credits rolled, but that explained my sense of “meh” (and why I couldn’t place him): historically I haven’t cared much for the writing of his that I’ve seen. It’s not bad, I just don’t find it to be particularly funny/smart/good.
Goodman’s character was the only one that interested me at all. The others were annoying (at best). I was disappointed, but I’ll watch the next epsiode or two and see if the show finds its feet. The concept has so much potential!
If you don’t like Danny McBride, this is perhaps not the show for you. In addition to writing and starring in it, he created and produced the show. (And this after creating Eastbound and Down and then Vice Principals also for HBO.) I liked it. Note that if you’ve been watching Succession, also on HBO and which airs just before this, you might notice some similarities.
For me I am not engaged with his character yet. I think the writing is fairly decent, and I plan to keep watching. I rewatched it this evening with my son and caught a fee nuances I’d missed.
That family sure likes slapping each other.

Yep, I’m watching it. I loved the dark humor of Vice Principals, and this one has delivered the same stuff.
“Are you going back to help him?”
“No”
It’s definitely a Danny McBride show, staring Danny McBride. And I like those kinds of shows!
Season 4 has started. The first episode was hilarious. A real laugh a minute?
Since the zombie has been resurrected anyways, I’ll agree with all of the above except the “I like those kinds of shows!” part. I can generally tolerate Danny McBride in small quantities, but I actually liked the Gemstones. Somehow his usual schtick works for me here.
I was hoping there was a more robust Gemstones community here on the dope, but I guess not…
I miss that the show has stopped being a send up of evangelical mega churches and is now just a weirdo rich family…but this season has been more fun than seasons 2 and 3 I think.
Definitely agree with this. Eli’s three kids have become even bigger assholes this season than they were in the past. And I could certainly have gone without seeing Baby Billy’s “equipment”. But there have been some truly entertaining scenes. Like when the kids burst in on Eli and Lori.
What hasn’t happened yet is for any of the three kids to become adults; they still seem like children.
And in the most recent episode, Amber gave Judy a trained service monkey to assist BJ. But I was thinking; after his paralysis, why doesn’t he have a human home health aide?
