The SDMB Admiration from Afar Thread

Poster: Polycarp. His grace, style, wit, and wisdom never fail to dazzle and humble me.

Moderator: The one I’ve always admired from afar is Gaudere. I don’t suck up to her the way I have with some of the others for two reasons: one, she moderates a forum in which I don’t participate much (because it’s just WAY over my head), and two, I not only admire her, I fear her. I’m always afreaid that she’ll just kick me in the head with her Poster-Stompin’ Moderator A Go-Go Boots if I got too close to the hem of her robe.

Poster. Esasy one: Eve. Witty, cool job, and she liked my Family Circus Sniper concept.

Modeator: Coldfire. For many of the reasons already said. Plus he doesn’t seem to fear wading in when the wading is good.

Ah, heckers. I can never pick and choose in these things. Too many great folks keep popping into mind. Nice problem to have though, innit?

Okay, okay. Admire from afar but don’t interact with much…hmmmm.

A couple of newish posters have vaulted into my must-read column: Redboss and Francesca: always interesting, insightful and frequently funnier than hell.

Mods/admins are even tougher, in a different way. I’ll go with Lynn: goddesslike blend of funky, offbeat humor with smooth, titanium-clad power. Nothing shakes her and no one intimidates her, but she’s fair and funny while doing it.

Veb

(Oh, phoooey!. Screwed up the bolding on Francesca’s name. Sigh.–Veb)

I think that the poster i choose would have to be Fenris - I always read your threads, you crack me up and your writing is always fluid and clear. I have a lot of respect for you.

For the mod, i’m going to go with TVeblen - always rational, often very funny, and most of all always human

Fran

I would like the record to note that i nominated TVeblen before i saw this. Wow, thanks - i’m almost ashamed to say that’s made my day

Fran

I got two votes? Has the world gone topsy turvy? I’m all blushy about it. Thanks pals. :: doin’ an ‘aw shucks’ thing with my big toe ::

Anyhoo,

Coldfire has been told on numerous ocassions that I dig him, but the other Moderator I love is Manhattan. I don’t know man. I learned a little too much about him in the Slave Auction thread and now I follow him everywhere.

Poster? Sheesh. There’s so many swell kids around here. But I do so love Sua Sponte. Funny, clever, SO VERY VERY SMART. He posted in one of my threads the first month I was here and hasn’t interacted with me since. sigh I just can’t impress him.

jarbaby

I was gonna say jarbabyj as well, but as I got drunk with her on Friday night, she’s no longer “afar” from me. Woman, you could not possibly BE any cooler.

For mods, I’d have to say Arnold Winkelreid, due to his legendary description of his years working at a religious bookstore, his impassioned and well-reasoned arguments in the trade with China thread, and his patience in class in moderating his forum.

For posters, I gotta say Collounsbury. Dude has got the patience of Job. I don’t post to many GD threads on subjects that interest me simply because y’all would kick my ass once you saw the number of “Well, as Collounsbury has stated so eloquently…” and “I agree with Collounsbury!” posts.

Scared of me? Please, don’t be!
Moderate the Pit? I wouldn’t last a day there, with all those meanies and poopy heads! :stuck_out_tongue:

And since you’re Swedish: your language skills aren’t half bad either. Or are you just living there?

Relative newcomer, but I’m always willing to stick my nose in where it doesn’t belong… I’ve been reading a lot longer than I’ve been posting, mainly because I don’t feel qualified compared to the rest of ya.

For poster, I’m going to have to say Quazgop the Mercotan which I’m completely sure I’ve mispelled. He’s brilliant and very informative - definitely a credit to the SDMB. My apologies for mispelling your name. Anthracite gets an honourable mention because she’s taught me a lot of things in fields I’m horrendously undereducated about and she’s also made me laugh some.

For moderator, I’m saying Coldfire after considerable debate… there’s a lot of good mods, but CF comes off as genuine, compassionate, and knowledgable. Unfortunately, I haven’t seen much posting from CF, manny, or Chronos lately. I’m guessing it’s a combination of my relatively intermittent presence, and the mod duties. Fairly sad, actually. :frowning:

FD - founder of SportNudity.

Polycarp is my admired-from-afar nomination. I’ve always thought of him as one cool guy. He usually says what I’m thinking, only a thousand times more concisely, coherently, and intelligently. (Not sure if those are words, but if they aren’t, they are now, okay?)

I gotta love TVeblen. I want to be like her when I grow up. She’s witty, smart, honest, fair, and cool as hell. I always walk away from her posts knowing something I didn’t know before, or thinking in a new way. Her non-mod posts make my day.

Slight hijack: Mag and Jar, next time you guys get drunk, I wanna be invited!

Next time we get drunk EVERYONE’S invited! And I’ll remember to bring cab money so I don’t have to wander aimlessly through the wasteland that is West Rogers Park

jarbaby

Hmm favourite poster, Fenris by a long way, there are lots of other cool posters but he’s the best!

Moderator: Coldfire but I have huuuge admiration for them all, I’d hate their jobs!

Oh, yeesh, I’m torn. I think Esprix (I read all of The Gay Guy threads whilst lurking…) and Anthracite (The Lesbian Orgy thread was my first post…) are my “admired from afar” posters.
For mods, I have to say Euty 'cos I see the most of his non-mod posts.
And, um, Soda, I’m kinda skerrid of Coldie, too?

Yeesh, I’m flattered - thank you, Fenris and moi. Feel free to interact with me more often {nudge nudge wink wink}.

Poster I most admire from afar? Actually, no one in particular - the people I admire are the ones I interact with. I was going to say Polycarp, for example, but he and I interact often.

As far as mods go, I suppose manhattan. I don’t hit his boards much, so when I see him post someplace where I’m posting, it’s always refreshing.

This, of course, only reflects the people I may admire that I don’t regularly post with. I admire the vast majority of people I do regularly post with, of course.

Esprix

Poster: This would have to be Xploder, I can never get enough of the stories about how his wife and daughters drive him nuts.

Moderator: Hands down, Euty. Look the sig below to find out what I am talking about.

Poster: I’d have to say Ukulele Ike. He’s cultured, witty, urbane, erudite – in short, he really classes up the joint.

Moderator: Well, I’d have to say Coldfire, because he’s remained calmly rational in the face of stupidity that would have had me phoning the Frost Giants and ordering a side of Ragnarok for the planet.

Maeglin He’s just that good. I feel outclassed, but I still think he rocks.

Alphagene so good for the Pit. He makes me laugh and he takes care of the forum I always feel like I’m breaking the rules when I post in.

Favorite poster, by far, is Scylla. One of the funniest, if not the funniest, posters on the board, and the first person every to acknowledge me back when I twas just a clueless newbie. He always knows what to say, how to say it, and when, and I don’t think I’ve ever read a post or OP by him that hasn’t made me laugh, think, or both. In short, Scylla is my own personal hero.

As for mods, I think Euty gets my vote. Never have I met someone more calm, and more lethal, all at once. <nods mysteriously>

I’d like to get in here and post something in this thread, but my head doesn’t seem to fit.

Thanks Jester. That’s just about the finest compliment I ever received here.
(Here’s that $50.00 I promised you)

Time to hear from a newbie.

Moderator - This one is easy Veb is a treasure. Consistent, funny and loves animals too.

Poster - Honorable mentions go to Fenris and Nachos4Sara, but Scylla has never failed to make my day. I have read posts so funny my bowels were in danger of losing control.
