The SDMB Weight Loss Club - Part Deux

Today, I started Phase 2 of South Beach. I get back some breads and fruit and milk. Yay!

I lost somewhere around 9# on Phase one (my bathroom scale is wonky, so this is best estimate) The shorts that were tight 3 weeks ago are now comfortable. My comfy jeans are now feeling baggy. Somewhere along the line, I’ll need to do some sewing and purchase some transitional clothing.

Mainly what I want to know, tho, is what’s going on with my cholesterol and triglycerides? I won’t have another physical till after the first of the year and I’ll have blood work done then. Can’t wait to see the results.

Most amazing to me is I’m no longer a slave to my sweet tooth. I don’t grab a candy bar when I’m at the grocery checkout. I can look at donuts without lust. I’m actually satisfied with some sugar-free gelatine or a sugar-free popsicle. Who’da thunk it??

I know, I feel the same way! For the first few days of not eating sugar, my body protested, but once withdrawals were over, my sweet tooth just went to sleep! Oh, it still wakes up occasionally, and looks longingly at something, but it’s not so hard to deny it. Of course, the danger in this is that I might get to thinking that I could eat just one donut, and then deny my sweet tooth again. But it’s taken me too damn long to get where I am to backslide now, so I won’t, I won’t, I won’t!

Weigh-in yesterday. I was all distraught at the fact that I didn’t lose a pound. Until my wife reminded me that the last time I weighed in, I’d been in a relative state of undress.

Similar conditions show that I did indeed lose 3 lbs.

FCM and norinew, bravo on the lack of sweet teeth! I’ve done the same thing. Someone brought in a huge gooey chocolate cake for a birthday last week and everyone had ice cream and fudge sundaes as well. I had a diet coke. I think I do it mostly 'cause I’ll tell my wife about it and she gets all cuddly and happy for me.

Okay–6 month report. I’ve lost 46# since January 20. I was aiming for 50; oh, well. I’ve gained a few pounds while doing heavy yard work, so I’ll assume it’s muscle. I’ve gone from a 20/22 to a 12.

Shoshana, that’s really impressive - congrats!

FCM, when the clothes are suddenly looser, who needs the bathroom scale to tell you it’s working?

After over a week in the 180.5 - 181.0 range, I’m suddenly down to 178.5 tonight. I kinda felt like there should be a weight drop on the way, but I wasn’t expecting one that big, relative to the scale of my diet. I’ll believe it a bit more if I’m still in that neighborhood when I step on the scale in the morning.

But when I started my laundry tonight, I tossed in two pair of the 34-waist jeans I bought recently; I’ve been at 36 for years now, but I think that’s about to end. W00t!

Hey, all you guys rock!! I have my own success story to share, but let me give you a little background info first:
Some years ago, I managed to low-fat diet my way down to 200 pounds. That may sound like a lot, but I’m tall, and big-boned and at 200, I looked good and felt good. So, my goal this time is 200 pounds (just about 57 pounds to go). Last time I hit 200, I wore a size 18, and I figured it would be about the same this time. I think I was wrong (in a good way). When I started, I wore a size 32 dress. Now, 57 pounds from goal, I fit into a 22 (incidentally, this is the size I was when we got married)! So, I’ve lost 58 pounds, and 5 dress sizes! If I lose another 57, I figure I’ve got to end up smaller than an 18! I think this is because this diet includes a lot more protein, as well as more weight-training, whereas the first time, my main exercise was cardio. I’m very pleased with how this is progressing.

Also, we’re going to an amusement park Monday. This is the first time since I started losing weight. Prior to this, there were some rides I didn’t quite fit on because of my size. I’m looking forward to that not being a problem this time.

Damned board ate my post.

Since March 1:

40 lbs
3.5 sizes
~24 inches.

GONE. Yay me!

Yay everyone!

I guess the board isn’t trying to lose weight like we are! hehe

Way to go, Ginger!

Yay, Ginger! And Gazelle, your voice in that post is so… firm. “I WILL weigh this, I WILL do that.” I like it!

For those keeping score at home, the numbers I post when we do these count-in things are based on my WW time, not on overall weight loss since my highest point.

I bounced back up to 210 as of this afternoon because I’ve been travelling and a.) ate really randomly plus b.) had access to Cadbury chocolate. Luckily I did a lot of walking or it could have been much worse. I am cutting myself a break and won’t weigh in tomorrow, but next Friday instead, so that it doesn’t seem like such a permanent setback.

CadburyAngel, I know of which you speak. I have a cooler full of chocolatey treats that I got while I was in Canada. I’m pretty sure I haven’t lost any weight this month, but I haven’t gained any more than where I was, either.

It has to be. I can no longer use the old hole. I have now officially started using the 4th hole of my belt as opposed to the 3rd.

Coworkers are noticing my flatter tummy, and my man-boobs are turning into pecs.

I have found ice-cream sandwiches that taste good that are only two points and I have discovered that popsicles are only one point.

And, I have enough points banked to let me go out for lunch today and have a bacon cheeseburger and fries. I’m really, really looking forward to that.

Oh! And Ginger? I’ll bet you look absolutely faboo! Congrats.

Congratulations all! Aguecheek, soon you’ll need a new belt. I picked out a belt this spring and had the holes punched so the first was the size I was wearing then. Now I’m on hole #3 and had to have a new one punched. The Belt Lady told me if I get thinner, she’ll start removing leather from the buckle end rather than punch more holes.

Okay, friends, here’s the bad part about losing weight–After I weighed so much for so long, I thought, It’s is dumb to hold onto these and I gave away my leather pants! Which would now fit again! And I would look oh so hot in them!

Though I weight 159, it’s thin to me, so I (ulp) bought a little black dress to wear to dinner tonight so as to surprise and amaze Mrs. Shoshana. As I am generally rather androgenous/butch this is not normal behavior, and I had to ask the sales clerk “Uh, what do you wear under something like this?” Answer: Apparently, either a body suit or nothing much. The latter is less expensive, but more chutzpahdik.

Well, I’m having to re-think everything about dieting, and have switched to mainly veggies and yogurt and plain water(although I had some German beer last weekend!), but the amount of meds I’m takin’ for my gout makes me look like Fat Albert.

Still, I wanted to let y’all know that I miss you “little heathens” and I wish you the best.

I have to get all kinds of blood tests and BP checks and stuff, so I don’t know whether “to shit or wind my watch” (and mostly it’s the former) sometimes, but right now my goal is to get back to cycling, join a gym and get back to playing my bass guitar.

I will not let this gout-shit get me down.

Your Pal

Q

Shoshana in leather pants… Shoshana in little black dress… Shoshana in leather pants… Shoshana in little black dress… (brain fizzles and dies happy)

I’ve been nursing the idea that I might get some leather pants once I am at goal. Unfortunately, I am a broke college student. But I’ll deal with that when I get there.

As of this morning, 205! 8 pounds gone since starting WW.

Weight Watchers is amazing, Cadbury.

I’m doing it down here in Corvallis.

I joined on May 19th. Thus far I’ve lost 38 pounds.

CadburyAngel, leather pants (or a good imitation thereof) can occasionally be obtained cheaply at Goodwill or Salvation Army. Also, I don’t know much about Oregon (spent 2 weeks there, 15 years ago), but around here we have “off-price” department stores. . .here in Cumberland, Gabe’s and Value City are popular. These are stores that sell factory seconds, discontinueds and slightly imperfects. My middle daughter got a good-looking faux-leather miniskirt at Value City at the end of season sale last winter, for about $3.00.

As for me, my pound loss has slowed down, but my inches continue to decrease. Hell, I don’t care if I weight 250 the rest of my life, if I can fit into a size 16 dress, lol!

Not quite 4 weeks on South Beach and 12# gone. Most of my jeans and shorts are comfortable - some are downright baggy. The snacks during the day have made a huge difference! So much so that after dinner, I don’t want to munch at all. That used to be my worst time, but now I don’t even think about it.

I’m actually looking forward to my annual physical in January - specifically the blood work. If my cholesterol and triglycerides aren’t down in the normal range, Dr. South Beach Diet is going to get a scathing letter!!!

Oh yeah, and I’m actually enjoying fruits instead of candy and pastry! Whoda thunk it??

This thing always seems to disappear by the time I log on.

Shoshana, you do realize now that you’re going to have to tell us how dinner went and Mrs. Shoshana’s reaction to the “little black dress,” don’t you?

WW is indeed great. I have yet to take advantage of the message boards or anything like that, but just being able to use the daily journal and the points calculator works best for me. Actually watching what I’m eating helps the most.

Weigh-in on Sunday. I refuse to look at the scale until every Sunday. I just do not want to know until then.

Good luck Quasi! My thoughts are with you! I have heard that if you drink enough water a day, you can lose weight that way… it would also help flush out some of those fluids that your body is retaining. Are you taking steroids? If you are, be sure you are taking plenty of calcium and vitamin D, to avoid bone loss.

Keep us updated!
