The SDMB Weight Loss Club - Part Deux

Oh, my, I can relate! Let me share a little story with all of you. Last July, I went for my annual OB/GYN checkup. My doc doesn’t nag too much about my weight, but this time, I started it. I was seriously considering bariatric weight-loss surgery, and I was asking him if he thought I had medical reason for it (IOW, would my insurance pay for it). He told me I didn’t need surgery, just this diet that he recommended. It went like this: Hight fiber cereal with skim milk and fruit for breakfast; for lunch, a large green salad dressed only with vinegar; for dinner, lean poultry or fish (no red meat) with veggies. No snacks in between meals. Well, I could probably live on that diet for about 2 days, but I’d be a miserable bitch the whole time. Now I can’t wait to go back to see him, almost 60 pounds lighter, and tell him what he can do with his diet! LOL! I’d had an appt. scheduled for July 22nd, but he had to reschedule. I’m due to go see him August 28th. I’ll keep you all posted!

Today, boys and girls, I am on the world-famous Kidney Stone Diet. The plan goes like this:
3:30AM: wake from a sound sleep to excruciating kidney pain and nausea.
3:35AM: Wake up spouse, and demand drugs.
3:40AM: make use of Compazine, wait for nausea to abate, follow with 2 Oxycodone.
4:15AM: Feel very stoned, go to sleep. Sleep on and off for about 7 hours, waking long enough to repeat medicine dosage as necessary.
11:00AM: Brunch, consisting of one slice of whole wheat toast with butter; cranberry juice mixed with Diet Sprite to cut the sugar.
More medication, sleep, and juice mixture as desired.
6:00PM: Dinner, consisting of one serving of sugar-free chocolate pudding, made with whole milk.
9:00PM: Evening snack of sugar-free Pina Colada smoothie.

Don’t know how much weight you lose on this plan, but it’s probably pretty effective, as I figure my calorie intake for the day is somewhere around 500-600.

Here’s hoping I’m back to my regularly scheduled program tomorrow!

norinew, sorry! Sounds terrible.

One of my doctors lives in my neighborhood, and I always feel gratified when she sees me out walking. What’s really great is when we walk together and I have more stamina than she does!

The little black dress worked very well, Aguecheek. The black Merrell hiking boots (not the same outfit, N.B.) also went over well. We climbed a “moderate” butte this morning and I was able to keep my blood sugar well regulated, as well as not twist my ankle, blow out my knee, etc. We saw a turkey buzzard, a California ground squirrel, one of my graduate students, her tattooed and pieced gentleman friend, and, in the distance, a mostly-contained forest fire.

Beauty. It’s always fun to be able to do more “sporty” things without feeling like you’re going to fall down and collapse into a hyperventilating puddle, isn’t it? On my evening walks with my neighbour, we’ve taken to running the last 1/2-mile. Where I used to stay even with him the whole way, matching his laboured breathing breath for breath, now I tend to pull ahead and breathe easier. The best part is that he works with my wife, and it’s great fun hearing his descriptions of the previous night’s walk as compared to mine.

Weigh-in today. I tipped the scales at 181.5 lbs. Actually, the first time I stepped on, it said 181, than 182 the second time. Figured I’d split the difference. Yay me! Besides the belt, the undershirts I use to complain about being too tight now fit me perfectly and the small rolls of fat between my armpits and my “pecs” have vanished.

I’ve now entered the weight zone that I totally missed when I started gaining it. I got married at 155 lbs and didn’t realize how bad it was getting until I stepped onto it a year later at 185.

Keep up the good work one and all.

The numbers I posted the other day are inaccurate.

41 lbs
26.25"
4 sizes.

Yippee!

It’s been an up-and-down week or so here. The 178.5 I noted in my last post was confirmed the next morning - but my rule is it takes 3 weighings in a row for it to be real. For good reason.

Because that day, I headed up to New England for Lucretia’s commissioning ceremony. Friday night, I had my first hot oven grinder in 17 years. (They’re a New England thing, and they’re wonderful.) Then there was a reception after Saturday’s ceremony, with lots of food and an open bar. Then back at Lucretia’s parents’ house that evening, there were the leftovers from the reception. Then I went out to dinner with my mom Monday night, and with my little sister Wednesday night. So I was up around 182.5-183.0 for most of the week.

But since then, I’ve been eating healthily again. Plus I’ve gone on a couple of kick-ass bike rides this weekend. The scale’s now looking more like 179.5-180.0.

Start: 194
Goal: 172
Current: call it 180.

I was originally hoping to reach my goal by Labor Day, but that’s not gonna happen. But I think I can get down into the 175-177 neighborhood by then, and I’d still be quite pleased with that.

How do you deal with scales that give you different numbers?

Saturday morning weigh-in, naked, pre-breakfast, post-using the bathroom: 225 lbs.

Yesterday afternoon at the doctor’s office, wearing clothes, shoes and leg braces, post-lunch: 238 lbs.

Which do you think is more accurate? Or is it impossible to tell? Note: this was my regular doctor. When I’m weighed at my dietitian’s office, her scale agrees much more closely with my own. (For example, last June, my dietitian’s scale said I was 237, when my home scale said 235.)

You could try weighing yourself at home as you described, then adding clothes, shoes and leg braces. This will give you a net weight. At least then you’ll know how much to subtract from the doctor’s number.

I’m disillusioned. We moved from Havre de Grace into Dundalk (Baltimore suburb) and I switched gyms. They did my weigh and measure, as I have done once a month. They measure in different spots than the women at my HdG gym did, and they’re saying that I’m only down about 22 inches rather than 26-28. What the hell? Plus, they weigh with our shoes on. I’ll just stick with my own scale at home, thanks.

I’m tired of dieting, but I’m not giving up. I have, unfortunately, misplaced my WW points slider - HELP! Does anyone have one laying around?

When I weight at the gym, I always weigh with my shoes on, cuz it’s so much simpler than taking off Nike’s, which lace up, then putting them back on. I’m not so much concerned with exactly how much it says I weigh as I am with how the weight it gives compares with last time I weighed on that scale. I have decided, however, that when that scale says I’m at goal weight, that’s when I’m gonna have my goal-weight celebration.

And, Ginger, good on you for not giving up!

I was visiting my grandmother in Vancouver last week, and her scale added 10 lbs to my at-home scale. I just waited until about the same time the next day to get a somewhat accurate idea of my previous week’s weight.

On to this week, my belt is threatening to slip down to the fifth hole from the fourth, so it’s going quite swimmingly! Or perhaps I should say…slimmingly.

I’ve taken my 4xweek 4 mile walking sessions to jogging, running as far as I can, and then walking for a while before starting again. I can make 2 miles before collapsing in a quivering puddle, walking 1/2 mile, and then completing the run.

Start weight: 195 lbs
Current: 175 lbs (I reached my 10%!)

Ginger, I only do the online WW thing, and I have no desire to cough up more dosh for a points calculator, but I found something online that ought to help. You’ll just need a simple little pocket calculator to use it. I’ll e/mail you the link as I can’t post the info here. Anyone else looking for help calculating WW points, feel free to drop me a line.

I have finally started walking again. Hopefully, my knees have recuperated enough and I won’t cripple myself this time with my efforts!
So far, no pounds yet, but I do feel much better!

Not quite 2 months on South Beach and 20# gone. I’ve already had to retire two pairs of pants that now look like clown pants when I put them on. Shirts that used to hug my hips are now actually loose at the hem! YAY! I’m so tempted to run to the doctor and get a blood workup done, but I really hate needles, and I do have other things in my life to tend to - so I’ll wait till my physical in January.

Fairy, I have heard several people mention the South Beach diet. I’m curious, what is it?

I think of South Beach as a kinder, gentler Atkins. It was developed by a cardiologist in order to help his patients reduce their cholesterol and triglycerides. As a side benefit, it promoted weight loss also. It’s a reduced carbohydrate diet, but not as severe as I understand Atkins to be. What really amazed me was that after two days, my sweet tooth was gone!! And on a couple of occasions, I’ve had a little candy (the regular stuff, not the sugar-free) and that little bit was enough! Pretty amazing for me, to be sure.

I’ve been eating lots more fruits and veggies, and I’ve hardly had any potatoes or white flour products since July 6. I do eat whole wheat bread and pitas, and pumpernickel and rye bread. I have 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. I’ve been able to eat out with no problem. It’s the most user friendly program I’ve ever followed.

I highly recommend reading the book. It’s clear and easily understandable and it includes menu and recipe suggestions.

I still like the idea of the South Park diet, FCM. Cheesy poofs!!

I’m bouncing around again, durnitall. Was down to about 178 before the weekend of the 16th and 17th, which had my sister’s wedding and assorted related festivities, and a farewell party for the Bluesclan. After that weekend, I still weighed in at 178.5. By this past weekend, for little apparent reason, I was back up to around 181. Aargh.

I’ve been working my way back down this week; this morning I weighed in at 179.5. I want to stay in the 170s, darnitall!!The two-day bicycle trip I’m going on tomorrow and Friday ought to help.

I’m holding at around 47 pounds off (lowest = 49) the last three months. When it starts creeping back up, I find that exercising before breakfast and eating grapefruit with stevia several days a week seems to take it back down.

I went to work a few shifts at a hospital where I’m per diem. The unit staff hadn’t seem me since February, so they were pretty damn impressed!

Before I left for my bike trip, I was down to about 178.5; now I seem to have settled in at 177, which I’d hoped to get down to by Labor Day. Yippee!

And only 5 more pounds to my ultimate goal of 172.

The plateau has been broken. I don’t know how much of that is due to the new WW Flex-points program, but I do know I’ve been stuck at the same damned weight for three weeks, and now I’m down a pound. Yay!
