The SDMB Weight Loss Club - Part Deux

Shoshana - Not to scare anyone away from DietPower but guess what happened two days ago? We had bad storms and while entering my dinner, the power flicked causing my computer to re-boot. As a result, my user profile is corrupted and the last 3 months of entries/history (…and Calorie Bank!) is gone. :frowning:

Yes, yes… I will write 100 times “Backup data often.” on the blackboard after school.

Teaira & Stephi - Welcome to The Club. 5 pounds or 50+ pounds, we’re all making the same choice to lose weight. Keep us informed of your progress and we’ll celebrate with you.

Zev - Congrats on reaching the home stretch. One good healthy “pooh” and you should be at your goal weight.

Oh okay… that was tasteless and uncalled for. Meaculpa.

MeanJoe

Okay, I’ll post here because I’ve been meaning to lose weight for a while. I’m 5’8, and currently at 175. I should probably weigh 160 (max), and maybe as low as 150. So I’m officially beginning my diet today. I figure posting here for everyone to see should help encourage me to actually stick to my diet. I’ll check back in a week or so to report my progress.

Welcom Opus1

Uh-oh. I take that back! If I start doing MeanJoe’s job, he might get meaner!

norinew - Hah! I tried to greet Opus1 earlier this evening but the hamPsters were on a smoke break so I couldn’t get the dang thing to even Preview.

Opus1 - Hi!*

    • Sorry you get the short greeting Opus, it is nothing personal I just don’t want to add stress to the hamPsters and send them off on another break.

MeanJoe - who one of these days will explain his username so that people will realize it has nothing to do with him personally being “Mean” or a “Joe”.

I’ve been lurking around the old thread for some time now but not posting (keeping my options open, y’know). However, I started going to the gym and watching my diet back in January when I realized I somehow had gotten up to 215 lbs (I’m a woman, 5’10"). Since then, I’ve gotten in the habit of going to exercise classes five days a week and lifting weights twice a week. I’ve also been trying to keep my overall calorie intake to between 1500 and 1800 a day. A week and a half ago, I weighed 188. Since then, the scale’s been reading 190 pretty consistently, but I figure that I’m doing all the right things, and the ultimate result has to be weight loss.

I weighed somewhere between 150 and 160 until I had children, and since then I was mostly between 180 and 190. I really packed on the pounds in the past couple of years, and that’s what finally shocked me into taking action. I’m really, really looking forward to getting past this plateau, if only for the symbolism - once I can get under 180, I’ll feel like I’m healthier than I’ve been for the past 13 years.

I wish I had more good news to share. I think that 215 was a fluke. I’m back at 220ish and not happy. I’ve also not gone to the gym any this week. I haven’t felt like it at all. Which isn’t a good thing cause that’s the attitude that got me stuck at this weight in the first place.

I’ll go to the gym tomorrow (no, really I can’t today. Not enough time.) and get back on track.

I would really, really love to join weight watchers but the only local meeting is on Thursday nights which is soooo convienant cause that’s when I have my Americorps meetings.:-p Although I think I’d trade Americrops in for Weight Watchers. Getting my weight under control is one of the more important things me right now.

Sorry to be a party pooper. I’ll be better next week. I promise.

Thanks a lot Meanjoe. I downloaded the program and will try and incorporate it into my routine. It is a lot harder to lose the weight now that I am over 30. I get home around 5 and Mrs.Phlosphr works from home - she’s writing a book - and she can do Pilates, Yoga ect…etc… until she is blue in the face. However, I am a teacher, so I am on my feet all day long.
I just found out I do not have to teach summer session and after commencment next week I have three months to lose 30 pounds. Aside from atkins, I think I am going to have to make rational changes in my diet, instead of drastic ones.
Couple Q’s:
How much carbo’s should I take out of my diet?
Does counting calories really work? (for a 6’ 220 person used to an english muffin and peanut butter every morning)
How much exercise is enough exercise?

I like this thread… Thanks all.

Philosophr, my grocery store has ‘light’ english muffins, and I eat them a lot. They are half the calories of regular english muffins, and in fact are only one point according to my WW slider, so roughly 50 calories. Peanut butter is around 100 calories for a tablespoon; however, if you put it on while the muffin is still hot from the toaster, a tablespoon goes a long way. Plus you get that added bonus of the nice little pockets of pb all the way through!

You know, the name was directly in front of me, and I spelled it wrong. I think I need breakfast.

That’s ok, it’s a phonetic spelling  . Used for a license plate

** MeanJoe,** thanks for saving me the effort of singing the “back it up!” song. I like Diet Power, though I mostly ignore its calorie recommendations and aim for 1400-1800/day with exercise.

I’m holding steady in the 170-172 range this week but even with no weight loss I’m fitting into pants that were too tight at the beginning of the week. I’m hoping for 165-ish by my 20th reunion in 3 weeks–that would be about 25# down from the last one 5 years ago.

Aesiron
Have you come up with any workouts you can live with yet? If not I wonder if maybe just fitting in a lunch time walk wouldn’t help you along the way (especially if you’re new to the whole cardio thing).

Also, I understand the embarrassment factor when it comes to the gym. Maybe you could try some work out videos? Alot of times you can check them out from your local library, to view before you buy it. or look them up on amazon.com to see reviews. (Your library will also have tons of nutrition books)

in addition, ANY walking/jogging/running you can do will help your body! grab a walkman, borrow a dog, get outside and go!

I quit smoking almost 2 years ago (after 28 years) and gained about 20+ lbs. I was eating healthier but still gaining (slower metabolism, I suppose) and couldn’t find an exercise regimen I could live with. I have now lost about 9 lbs since I have taken up Thai kickboxing (about 3 months ago). I sweat my butt off (literally) each class: I am reshaping, building muscle, toning, and losing fat. It’s fun, not boring, and for all ages and body shapes. Learning self-defense makes me feel mentally stronger also. There is also cardiokickboxing, which is more aerobic exercise and less self-defense training, but very good for a body.

I am another one who has a difficult time drinking adequate amounts of water, but am trying to be more aware.

My fat-intake weakness is cheese. So I stay away from cheese during the week and have it with one or two meals on the weekend. I have been eating shrimp (bought cooked and frozen) fairly regularly; high protein/low fat.

Good luck everybody. Glad I found this thread.

I’ve been doing okay so far this week, although not terrifically. Though I have stayed within my points range, I had a Krispy Kreme donut (the first shop in the province opened here a couple of weeks ago and there has been much hype).

One of my main problems is getting myself to the gym, since I hate exercising and feel it’s pretty much a waste of time that could be spend reading or working or playing. Does anyone have tips on how to make it more painless, or what workouts to do? What I’m currently doing is one hour of yoga once per week (which I like), and trying to do a usual routine of 20 min on the elliptical and 10 weight machines any other day I can get myself to go (varies between 0 - 3 times per week, usually 2).

Ok, I’ve just got to know if low-carbers are welcome here or not.

If so, I promise not to wax poetic on the glories of homemade alfredo sauce!!

LaurAnge, I hate pointless exercise. I have been walking to work and to do errands on sunny days, as well as more housework/gardening than I’d ordinarily do. I’m hoping somebody will need help loading a moving van sometime soon!

Failing that, there’s dancing in the living room.

Everyone is welcome here, Avarie537. We don’t care how you lose it, we’re just glad that you are losing. Share some of your secrets with us, learn with us, be with us.

And at the risk of incurring the wrath of my bud MeanJoe for taking over the greeter’s job, I’ll slip back into my area of expertise, cheerleading, and say , Yay, Avarie 537! Welcome!.

Q

Another fat doper reporting in.

Been doing Weigh Down Workshop since October. Have lost 31 pounds since … but that was with a VERY long period of time in which I just maintained.

Started working out 3 weeks ago. I’m up to 30 minutes on the treadmill (hamster wheel) at 2.7 mph and 8 minutes on the stairstepper. Also started lifting today too, the machines make you start at 30lbs. I’m a bit sore.

I’ve promised myself that if I do this workout thing 3 times a week for 3 months, I will treat myself to a facial, manicure and pedicure at the local Chez Snooty spa.

BEEFCAKE!!!

This is true, of course, only within reason. Witness some posts above where we sort of (in a loving way) jumped on Aesiron for his method of weight-loss. I am certain, Avarie, that if you posted that you were losing weight by eating nothing but apples 6 days a week, and then adding hard-boiled eggs on the 7th day, we’d have plenty to say about it! Not because anyone appointed any of us to be the “diet nazis”, but because we all care about each other. So, if any of us think that another is doing something that is harmful, things will be said. I don’t think most of us count low-carb as harmful though. BTW, I have a low-carb meatloaf recipe that kicks ass! I haven’t posted it here, because it’s certainly not low-fat, and I seriously doubt that it’s low in points, but if you want it, I could email it to you!

Best of luck and welcome!

Don’t listen to norinew, I hate you all equally.

Weirddave bought me a bike for my birthday. It was too big, so he kept it for himself and we bought me another one. I forsee more exercise in our futures. I had planned to ride to the gym this morning, but the heavens let loose and it’s kinda soggy. Not today, I’m afraid, but still, YAY!
