The SDMB Weight Loss Club - Part Deux

I was discussing weight-loss with a friend last night, and she mentioned something I hadn’t thought of. . .she said she’d have to lose about 40 pounds to get down to her “drivers’ license weight”!! So, now, I have a new goal. . .to be down to the weight on my license by March 1, 2004 (62 pounds to go).

So how far for all of you guys?

To get to my DL weight?

A whooooollllle lot.

When I first moved here in 1998, I had to get my license redone, and I told a big whopper of a lie for my weight. They don’t seem to care too much if you’re lying as long as they have a number to put down.

Then I gained some weight, had a baby, etc.

Will be a long time before my weight is actually what’s on my DL. But I’ll get there  We all will

I just got in from a jog. It only lasted ten minutes and I probably walked four of those. Even still, my heart is trying to jump out my chest and I’m just now breathing regularly after walking in the door five minutes ago. Gah. I hate exercise.

DL Weight: 190lbs
Today: 181.4

Oh yea!

Aesiron, I know people who have taken up jogging and come to love it! Last time I lost a substantial amount of weight, I had begun to walk/jog, which meant I would walk for 4 minutes, then jog for 1, walk for 4, jog for 1, until I’d been going for a total of 30 minutes. It’s like interval training. It was very effective. I’m still a ways from being in good enough shape to do that again! Also, at that time, we lived about a mile from a mall I liked a lot. I would walk/jog to the mall, speed walk around the mall, treat myself to a cup of specialty coffee at the Gloria Jean’s, then walk/jog home again. A pleasant work-out that I actually came to enjoy!

MeanJoe, way to go!

Man, I’m really falling behind in reading these boards! Thanks for starting a new thread, and I’m sorry it took so long for me to rejoin ya’ll. School finals and work kept getting in the way. :frowning:

Ok, I decided to wait a little while to pop back in since hubby and I did our weigh-in today.

Yes, we are on The Evil Low-Carb Atkins Diet From Hell That Will KILL YOU!!! (as some would say)

After two weeks, I am down 12.5 pounds and inches all over (2 off the chest - below boobs, 3 off waist - I can’t wear my fave pants anymore!). I have more energy now that I have since high school. I no longer want to take a nap every day when I get home. I don’t get hungy like I used to, thanks to the fat intake. We eat at home more often now (but we may go to O’Charley’s tonight). We will probably stay on Induction for one more week, just to get the best jump-start that we can.

Now I just need to actually use the Pilates machine that we bought off of QVC. I am going to start getting up 30 min earlier in the morning to do it, since that’s the only chance I’ve got.

Please feel free to ask me any questions that you may have about low-carbing. I know there have been many GD threads on the topic, but I figure this forum is less likely to engender, oh say, hostility or indignance.

Quasi, you look so cute over there!!

After my heart stopped trying to explode, I actually liked the feeling. I’m one of those people that likes the exercise high but just doesn’t like exercising.

I might have to try that walking/jogging combo. Thanks for the tip, norinew.

Hey, that’s one of the reasons I’m here!

Monday is my weigh & measure day at the gym. I think it will be 28 lbs, inches to be determined. I’ll let you all know tomorrow.

So I’m gonna hire a personal trainer.

Turns out my school allows the undergrad um, exercise majors (don’t know what their official word is) to serve as personal trainers … for a fee.

$10 a day, which is dirt cheap but still waaaaaay out of my budget. (A session runs anywhere from 1-2 hours depending on how sadistic she’s feeling that day.)

Once I heard the price I thought “forget it,” but turns out one of my summer school classes for June has been cancelled … so the school will be returning my $373. Gonna take $200 of it and invest in myself for a change.

Should be interesting. A girl in my Psych class is working with her right now and Friday she had her head on the desk moaning.

I don’t care, though. I’m ready for a change.

Oooooooooh, Snoopy!! One of my best friends has gone to a personal trainer. They are e-vil incarnate!! Best of luck to you!

Weigh & Measure day at the gym.

After two months, 5 days a week:

-3" bust
-3" waist
-6.5" abdomen
-5" hips
-4" thighs
+1" arms
Total inches lost 20.5

18 lbs lost, 12.75 lbs of which are body fat.
I had lost 8 lbs before I started as well, so total is 26 lbs (although they admit the scale is high by a couple of pounds and needs balancing).

Wow, Ginger, way to go!!

Ok explain this to me people:

For nearly a month, I have exercised my ass off. At least 30 min a day, 3 times a week. Aside from a couple of slip-ups, I’ve been eating pretty decent.

I’ve lost a whole 2 pounds.

I LOOK like I’ve lost 20, though.

Just how fast could I be putting on muscle? Why is the scale stuck on the same number? Am I just putting on pounds of muscle right now and that’s why the numbers are the same? Or what?

You will not burn fat unless you are exercising with your heart rate in a certain range. The muscle is taking the place of fat that is slowly going away, too.

Finally! Down to 200! Over in ASDLC we used to call that “getting a visit from the ‘whoosh fairy’”, but it coulda been that “massive” I took just a few minutes ago :D.

Yay me, and yay us!

Q

Okay riddle me this. I ate like crap all week, didn’t exercsie until last night (a half-assed trip to the gym it was too!) and this morning I was at 215 again. WHAT THE CRAP? I should be up, not down!

I give up even trying to understand this weight loss thing. :stuck_out_tongue:

I ate with abandon all weekend and wasn’t on my diet at all. Should be interesting to see my weight when I go into work today.

Quasi, way to lose!! 200 is my big goal. I know it sounds like a lot for a woman, but I’m 5’8", large-boned (really and for true), and last time I weighed 200 and was properly toned, I was between a size 16 and 18, and I looked and felt good! I think it’s a realistic, healthy goal for me.

fizzes, yeah, I’ve had experiences like that before. But instead of trying to analyze a single week of eating, what you should be looking for is a general trend. No doubt if you kept eating and not exercising like last week, the general trend would be up, not down. It’s also possible that you might do everything right this week, and last week’s bad behavior might come back and bite you in the ass. But again, if you are having a general trend in the scale numbers going down, you must be doing something right!

Now for my own recent success story: I went shopping yesterday for a dress to wear to a wedding Saturday, and the dress I finally settled on was a 26. I know that’s pretty big, but what makes it a success story is that the last dress I bought, 6 months ago, was a 30-32! Down 3 whole dress sizes! Yay, team.
