That sort of reminds me of something my friends and I used to say about a hot but dumb guy we knew: “Body by Nautilus, brains by Mattel.” (I’m sure your brains are fine, Ginger. It’s just the syntax that reminded me.)
Hey, has anyone noticed a difference when they do/don’t drink a lot of water during the day? I’m still trying to track down the reasons for my pathetic one-pound weight loss last week.
The way I understand it is that reduced calories and increased exercise breaks down fat cells. Water actually helps “flush” it out of the body. Then again, I could be wrong.
Okay, I’ve done a bit of Internet research and found this basic information repeated on several sites, one of which I’ve partially quoted here:
Also, I found several references to the flushing you are talking about. So considering I pretty much drank only pop last week–bad, I know–I think I can safely hypothesize that that really contributed to my losing only a pound. I will experiment and report the results.
skeptic: if you’re still on the Atkins program, you MUST MUST MUST drink a minimum of 64 oz of water daily. I can’t tell you how incredibly important that is.
Plus, if you’re drinking diet soda containing aspartame (Nutrasweet), give that stuff the boot. Aspartame is notorious for stalling out weightloss.
Yes, I know. Bad skeptic_ev, bad! However, the pop (AKA soda) has mostly been Diet Rite–there are several flavors now–which is sweetened with sucralose (Splenda).
Out of curiosity, though, why do you specifically mention the Atkins diet? Is it because of the whole protein/kidneys thing? Or because of the relatively rapid weight loss desired? Inquiring minds want to know.
I read about a study several years ago that showed that many people can’t always tell if they’re hungry or thirsty. The study focused specifically on latenight snacking, and found that for a large percentage (I can’t remember now), a glass of water was as satisfying as a snack. After that I stopped eating after dinner snacks - just drank water - and lost about 20 lbs. in short order. So that might have something to do with the need for water too.
Well, I’ve been dutifully drinking my water. Still no weight change, though. I can’t figure this out. Surely I have not hit a plateau this early in the process. Sigh …
Happy days are here again,
The skies above are clear again.
So let’s sing a song of cheer again.
Happy days are here again!
By that I mean that I think the water may have been it. Just for kicks I got on the scale after I got home from work this evening, and I weigh a pound less than I did this morning! (I think I may have retained extra water last week, since I wasn’t drinking any.)
Gingy, I’ve got one thought: perhaps shifting to another type of diet might help get you unstuck. You’re on WW, IIRC; maybe try South Beach for a few weeks, and see if your body responds favorably to a different approach.
Is it too late to join the crew? I need to lose some baby weight and started back on my Weight Watcher’s points plan two weeks ago.
I started WW in 1999 and dropped 76 pounds over about 15 months. The week I hit lifetime I discovered I was pregnant with my daughter. I had her and then got back to work with losing baby weight. I finally lost all but the last 10 pounds and ended up pregnant with my son.
Now I need to lose 40 pounds and while I know I can do it - it is hard sometimes to stay on track especially with the holidays coming up.
