The SDMB Weight Loss Club Part Drei (three)

No nonononono… I better not get pregnant again! My tubes are tied!

Parallax is going to be in big trouble should he get me pregnant again!

Oh and thanks for the welcome

Thanks for the advice, but no. I can’t give up carbs.

Ginger, what about something that’s not low-carb? Something crazy like the grapefruit diet, maybe, or cabbage soup or something. It’s not completely healthy, but if you supplement and only do it for a few days, it might kick you out of the rut.

Also, I think chromium, Coenzyme Q-10, and L-Carnitine are supplements that are supposed to help with fat burning. (No side effects like ephedra has, either.

Oh, and I’m down to 177!

I’m frustrated right now. I decided to bring up my carb intake an extra 5 grams a day, and my scale hasn’t moved all week. Granted, part of that is that I wasn’t able to go to the gym for the last half of the week (damned pre-holiday rush!) and I know, I know, weight fluctuates and sometimes you lose inches while the scale stays the same… but, dangit! I wanted to see some movement this week!

Bah. Back to 25 grams of carbs a day. I was doing really well at that level.

Well, what a difference a day makes. I woke up this morning to 202.5.

I’m thinking about joining a diet plan online, to kick my eating habits into gear. The two that look most appealing to me are WW online, and SouthBeach diet online. Does anyone have any opinions on these, or others I should consider? How are they in terms of convienence, price, quality, etc? And with WW, what’s your points range based on?

Stuck at 199…

Well, I’m on Atkins and heartily recommend it, but I know people who are having success with South Beach as well. Of course, WW is popular too; I ruled it out for me because I know several people who went off it too soon or gained all the weight right back, and somehow I knew I’d be one of those.

What you might want to do is read the various books that describe the programs, then decide. I thought Atkins was potentially a dangerous, crackpot diet until I read the book. (I’m a sucker for scientific evidence.) Now I’m healthier than I’ve been in a long time.

Have you talked to your doctor? Mine recommended WW for me because it gave you the most options for deciding what you wanted to eat. He also reminded me to stay away from the low carb/high protein plans because I have kidney disease and need a low protein diet.

Good luck

Pammipoooooo: I’m on Weight Watchers. I can’t rave enough about it. I can eat whatever I want. If I want to go to NYC and eat half a pig at a Cuban place, followed by big-ass bagels the next morning, I can. I can have anything at all so long as it fits within my points plan.
Points are based on your weight, period. A point is roughly 50 calories. At a weight of 150-199 points, your points target will be 24. You are also allotted 35 “Flex” points per week (weigh-in day to the day prior to that is your week). You can also earn ‘activity’ points which you may eat, or not eat, however you’d like.

For instance (An actual day in my life this past week):
Point value, followed by what I ate

6 bagel
1 margerine
.5 coffee
1 bread
2 cheese
1 pastrami
2 chips
4 bread
6 garlic bread
6 lasagne
6 (2) draught beer
5 Mike’s hard lemonade
Total points eaten 40.5
-9 AP (30 minutes cardio, 90 minutes walking)= 31.5
-5.5 Flex = Target 26

Each day, you start fresh. No banking of any points other than Flex points. You also have to drink 6-8 glasses of water. They also suggest eating 2 servings of dairy, and 4-5 of fruits and vegetables. I do what I like, but I lose better if I drink at least that much water and usually more; and it won’t kill you to skip a couple of servings of vegetables (like I do a lot).

These are all determined by using my points slider. I joined WW and went for a month in March-April before getting annoyed with whining. When you’re doing it online, you enter the nutritional information of the food and it will calculate points for you. It will also calculate activity points for you.

There are many, many ‘zero’ foods as well. I have a list of low-point and zero-points foods. If you have any questions on the plan, you can email me at gingerofthenorth at hotmail.com, or ask in the lj community sdmbww.

Good luck in whatever you chose to do. We’ll help you as best we can.

I also thought about this list I have, and realized I have an abbreviated list online at this page.
I don’t know how much WW online is (iirc about $15), but a friend who uses it tells me it’s worth it. I paid $10ish per week when I went to the in-person meetings, and within four weeks I had all of the sliders and books I needed. You can buy books from them which have point values for just about any food under the sun, but I prefer to use the slider if the nutritional values are available.

Well, I’ve lost about 19 pounds so far, and while my face is thinner and my jeans are looser (I’ve gone down about a size, I think), still—I expected more visible evidence of my weight loss. A little disappointing, but I figured, hey, it’ll happen. I can wait. Still, it was a mystery. I mean, nearly 20 pounds gone, and I’m not sure from where. (Yes, I measure, though I probably should add more measurements. Currently, once weekly I measure my waist, hips, chest, upper arm, thigh, calf, and ankle. Total loss so far: 11.25 inches.)

That was, until last night. I was snuggling with my honey, and he said the fat was gone off my back. I reached around and felt, and by golly, he was right. I have bones back there now. I just never noticed because I tend to wear loose shirts and sweaters, I think.

Okay, this is for Quasi, though I hope you all enjoy it. Ahem.

*Some twenty pounds I had are gone,
Though I’m not sure from where.
It’s true my waist and hips have shrunk,
As has my derriere.

Still, all this loss should show up more.
At least that’s what I think.
(Tho’ truth be told, I’m feeling good.
I’m living in the pink.)

Oh, wait! I think I have a clue
Where all that fat was from.
I reach around to feel my back,
And now I’m not so glum!

Can I buy the slider without being a member?

I have an extra. Email me - better yet, get on AIM. I’m “Gingerofthenorth” on there.

BTW, I couldn’t get the page you linked to load- is it just me?

Good morning, everyone. Good morning, 202. After being up .5 lbs for two days, I’m down a full pound.

  1. Grrr.

I’ve found another thing that stalls weight loss. (I called the Atkins center and asked them. They confirmed my suspicions.) Just like the book says, you have to eat at least every six waking hours. For the past two days I’ve had late, late dinners even though I had lunch at my normal time. No more. I will start eating string cheese or macadamia nuts or something if I can’t eat a real meal.

Pretty soon I’ll be able to write an Atkins e-book: Ways to Stall Your Weight Loss. Anyone else had this experience? (The not eating thing, I mean, not writing an e-book.)

Oh, and congrats, Ginger. I knew it would happen for you.

Weigh-In day today: even after eating everything in sight yesterday, I am down to 201.5. Yippee!

Wow, Ginger, good for you!!

Unfortunately, I believe my recent entry into the wonderful world of menopause has stalled my weight-loss. Thank God I haven’t regained anything! I think that what I may have to do is to do something fairly drastic for a few days, to jump-start me back up. But I don’t think I have the gumption to do that til after Christmas.

I’m only up a pound from pre-holiday, which I find remarkable seeing all the food I’ve eaten over the last week.

I can live with a pound…
