Hi y’all. I have been following my diet with very few exceptions (1 beer, 1 cookie) and getting exercise every day, but I have gained back 14#. It’s really frustrating! The variables that I can identify are:
I’ve been traveling a lot, so I don’t get exercise consistently first thing in the morning.
Since I’ve been travelling, I’ve had more added salt.
I went off the pill two moths ago to see if my body could regulate itself. Might be that it can’t.
So I’m trying to be of good cheer but I’m pissed off!

JustPlainBryan is doing spectacularly well with it. He’s also lost 16 pounds and is very happy with the diet so far–he’s not hungry and gets to eat sausage (that makes for a happy Bryan).
Then again, I’m cooking almost every meal for him, so he’s been eating well, too.
The next step for me: joining the newly-opened Curves just a few miles from my house and finally getting back on track with the exercise.
I’ve decided to get me some bathroom scales and find out what my weight is. Want to improve my health asap so I don’t keep getting sick - part of that should be to lose some weight.
I’d been doing pretty well up until early this year, but I stopped going to the gym after finding out about my health problems, which was followed by a three week spell in the hospital (although I lost about 10 pounds during my stay there). This was followed by about a month of relative inactivity which also included so heavy drinking sessions (the dopers involved will remain unnamed). By the end of August, I was close to 200 pounds for the first time in my life.
Now that my doctor has cleared me for regular exercise, I’ve started going to the gym about three mornings a week. Perhaps even more traumatically, I gave up drinking at the start of September and haven’t had a drop in six weeks. I’ve also tried cutting back on snacks and doing more walking.
So far, it seems to have helped. The gym has a good full-body fat/muscle guage that I use to keep regular tabs on my progress.
I’m down 101lbs since 10 months ago when I had my surgery* and I’m ONE pound away from my goal of 115lbs. For the math challenged, that makes me 116lbs.
I got a size small white lace bustier on ebay and it fits perfectly. Woohoo! I got so excited I even took pictures.
i took my waist this morning (my waist is always 1" or so smaller in the morning) and it was 40.5". i am getting close to 40". I won’t stop at 40 but 40 is a major milestone for me. Once i start getting down to 39, 38, etc then i will not technically have a large waist anymore. i’ve come a long way from that 50.5" i had june 15th.
Alright, so random weight loss related question. I’ve noticed lately that my collarbone is highly visable, and I have a noticable indention going diagonally down my stomach. Not quite a 6-pack, but maybe the very early makings of one. Is this from all the weight I’ve lost, or have I just never noticed before?
Question: Would eating salt make it harder to loose weight? I love salt, but I am perfectly willing to give it up (yikes. Meat without salt?) if I have too. Any advise is highly appreciated.
I never used a lot of salt, but I’ve not changed the amount I use. I can’t imagine that using a light to moderate amount would make a difference, but I’m not a dietitian.
Pami, one of the first things I noticed when I was losing weight was my collarbone becoming more defined (along with the tendons in my neck becoming somewhat visible when I move). I think it’s nifty - it adds more shadows and interest to the face and neck region.
Uh, yes, I’m back. Back on plan, too. Been a bad girl and gone up to 210 again. I was down to 201 for a brief shining moment, but that was after wisdom tooth surgery, so I hadn’t been eating for a while, then when I ate I threw it up, and after that I ate very sparingly. It’s all back now, thanks in part to the stress from another medical issue. However, I’ve started with the Points Tracker on WW again, and my new goal is to be under 200 by Thanksgiving.
Somewhere along the line I lost an inch off my waist without losing pounds. I don’t track my waist too much as I can apparently be clinically obese (210 pounds) and still have a “safe” waist (34.5 inches). If only the fat was really gone, instead of relocating to my thighs! Still, it’s nice to note.
This thread appeared on the front page at the perfect time for me. Obsidian and I just got back on Weight Watchers. We tried it at the beginning of the summer and only lasted a few weeks before falling off the wagon. Ob did pretty well, but I was actually gaining weight. I think it was because the point range they gave me was too high. I lowered it for this time around and I’ve lost three pounds since Sunday! I know it’s mainly water weight, but that’s pretty good considering it’s, um, that time of the month (sorry if that’s a TMI) and I’m retaining.
Anyway, so, so glad this is here. One can never have too much support or sympathetic ears.
Congratulations to all of you who’ve lost, keep up the good work.
Quick questions - I’m looking to purchase some scales for home. But I’m working some long hours and can’t get to the scale selling shops while they are open - but last night I noticed the chemist had a set of scales for customers. You pay 10c and it tells your weight. How embarrassing is that going to be? Anyone used them before? Hopefully it would be accurate.
I should amend the above to “been not as bad a girl as I thought, and am only 205 rather than 210.” That’s good news. My current goal is to be under 200 by my birthday (November 14th). I have not been that light since before high school. I think it is a good birthday present to me, and I plan to celebrate with a big piece of chocolate cake… spending WW points that I’ve saved for the occasion!
leechbabe, I can’t speak for Down Under, but in the US I haven’t found public scales to be at all accurate.
I’m down 2# to 172 with the goal of 160-164 by Thanksgiving, when I’ll eat some stuffing so as not to feel deprived, and my partner will also make a low-carb, sugar-free pie. My sister’s gentleman friend will apparently make rice krispies squares, and my partner will oblige by eating them.
I had my weigh & measure at the gym today. Unfortunately, it’s that time of the month, and that skews the results. I’m almost ashamed to say them, but it’s onlyl 1.25" down in a month. Uh, no… I’ll get them to re-do it in a week and post then. Maybe.
What I don’t get is why their scale says I’m down 3 pounds from a month ago, and mine says 6.5. Hmmm.
I’m feeling frustrated. From other posters I gather that everyone looses weight in different ways, like inches before pounds, or pounds before inches. I’m doing the Atkins, I feel good. I have more energy and I’m not driven by the thought of cinnomon sugar toast at night.
But I am not loosing any weight. 2 pounds in the first week and that is it. No inches either, although it probably was way to early to check that. I went out and bought the little pee sticks that can tell you if you are burning ketones, therefore fat, and the little sucker did turn an impressive shade of purple, just like it is supposed to. (yay!!) So I must be doing something right.
I drink lots of water, and have my herbal hot tea in the morning. I have been scarfing down my 2-3 daily cups of salad, making sure that I space it out through the day, and have my nice pork chops or chicken or steak. I dont stuff myself. If I cant be bothered to eat sensibly in the morning I have one of those low-carb shakes like the book says is ok.
So what am I doing wrong? Or am I so desperate for this to work that I am just flogging myself?(Always a possibility)
Papa, it may help if you post your menu and let us see it and how you prepare your food.
In my case, it was the amount of diet drinks I was consuming on Atkins that were slowing me down. Also, I was eating so much meat that the calorie count was way more than the lack of carbs I was ingesting. (Contrary to the earlier Atkins days, you gotta watch those cals along with the carbs.)
Also, when do you eat? Again, for me (I work nights) I better not eat just before I go home and go to bed, because I won’t be doing anything to work it off.
How much water are you drinking? You gotta get those 8 glasses a day in!
Finally, it’s been a while since I flogged myself, but I would think the weight loss as a result would be negligible at best.
Don’t get discouraged. The fact that your pee is turning the keto stix purple means you got off to a good start, but you may have some other things going on that are stalling you. Keep a food diary, if you can, and look for the “hidden carbs”. alt.support.diet.low-carb is a great newsgroup for help if you can’t get it here.
