The Search for America's Next Top Model

Did anyone else see this? It came on UPN here last night, two one-hour episodes. Kind of like American Idol, but for models. I am so thankful because I need something to fill the reality television void left in my life after Survivor and American Idol finished their seasons. (gosh, that’s pathetic!)

Anyways, it was actually not too bad. The luscious Tyra Banks is running the show–at least in front of the cameras. She is also on a panel of judges that eliminates one of the wannabe models every week. They started with a large pool and narrrowed it down to 10. Two of those were eliminated last night (in two episodes) so there are eight left.

There is actually a nice variety of looks among the girls. They’re all attractive, of course, but in different ways. Some of them are SMOKIN’ hot! They also have a pretty interesting mix of personalities.

One is a Southern, black, beauty pageant veteran. She’s the oldest at 26 and she is described as a “plus-sized” model. Meaning she’s the heaviest at 165. (they filmed all the girls having a weigh-in) She’s also a DEVOUT Christian and very vocal about it. She doesn’t seem to have a whole lot going on upstairs.

Then there is her polar opposite. A (self-proclaimed) intellectual from Albequrque, NM. She actually does come across as fairly intelligent, except during a particularly venomous rant in the confessional where every other word was an obscenity (bleeped, of course, but I’m sure she called at least one of the other girls a “cunt”). She is a small white girl, and when I say small I really mean that she is SHOCKINGLY THIN. I mean, she looks completely emaciated. A skeleton. Oh, and she’s also an atheist, so there were some tense moments between her and the Christian girl, who felt compelled to pull everyone into a spontaneous group prayer whenever there was a conflict.

There’s also a beautiful 18 year old, and a midwestern girl who’s gorgeous but has a terribly annoying voice, and a bald, BOLD woman from Harlem, and a Tyra look-alike (but not really) and a stunningly hot blonde who is the judges’ favorite so far.

The best part of the show was when the wannabe models were treated to a surprise Brazilian bikini wax. There was some fairly shocking footage of the waxing taking place, and the girls’ faces as the wax was pulled off.

So I’m going to tune in next week. There are a lot worse ways to spend an hour than staring at beautiful, scantily-clad women.

Maybe it is because I’m up well past my bedtime, but the first time I saw this thread title, I read it as "The Search for America’s Top Mohel.

Urp.

I should go to bed now.

But first I gotta read just one more thread…

Well, at least they’re cutting through any bullshit aboout “talent” and getting to exactly what America wants their young women to be- skinny and silent. I saw the British version, but can’t remember- how exactly do these girls compete? And do they have some sort of counselling on the premises?
I know one thing, I’d hate to be the plumber sent to wherever they’re living.
I hope this show gets shut down and replaced with the BBC documentary on the scandals involving the Elite Modelling Agency.
