There seem to be a lot of them about, even in threads which don’t mention religion or the particular words used. I’m not complaining about it, I was just wondering whether the ad purchaser would be able to “target” the boards in particular with their ad? Or perhaps the keyword systems selects ads for the whole forum rather than just the thread they’re used in?
Could just be me noticing them over other ads, of course. They do seem more prevalent, though.
I’ve noticed these as well. They do appear to show up more frequently than other ads - though like you I wonder if I might just notice them more - they do irritate me somewhat.
Now, when I see them, I scan the thread for any keyword that may have prompted the ad - I rarely if ever find one.
Ah. Forgot about “the”. Still, considering that pretty much every thread is going to have “the” in, it still seems to turn up more often than any other “the” ad.
Google has to come up with an ad for every page. So even if no one has paid for the keyword revenant or felching or death-ray or whatever sophisticated topic we dopers happen to be discussing in a given thread, they have to put an ad for something down there. (Remember, advertisers have to bid on specific words, so even if someone has an ad on Google for felching revenant goats with a death-ray, it won’t show up unless they’ve paid for those words.) So Google will have a default ad for a site at any given time. Perhaps ours now is “The Second Coming.” In the past, we’ve had the Bush-Clinton Katrina Fund and an ad saying “Democrats Suck.”
