The only time he “retreated” was to take a step back to get enough space for maximum effectiveness from the left hook. Literally every moment leading up to this, he was either aggressively advancing on her, or actively attacking her. For anyone to call this self defense is just out of line.

I do not see him put maximum effectiveness into it, which in a man of his size and conditioning, could have easily broken bones and killed her. I don’t see a desire for “maximum effectiveness”, but what must be for a top trained athlete, an effort that might be restrained. I don’t think that you make your best case when you say it was for “maximum effectiveness”.
