The Shield: 4/2/02

Surprised no one else started one. I’m pretty impressed with this show still. I think Mackey’s world is starting to crack. He’s losing his power in the office because of the captain, his family is having problems that he’s not addressing, and the hold he thought he had over the criminals is slipping big time. But I am really liking his character despite myself.

The chief, well, hey, we knew he was a schemer, right? He’s looking to grab some serious local political power. And I really don’t like him (in the show, I do’nt have a problem with his acting).

The female cop and her partner, I really like them both. I’m glad she isn’t taking any shit from the criminals, but I fear for her anyway. I really like her character and I’d hate to see her off the show by dying or something. They had an awful lot going on in this episode, but I would have liked to see the black cop wrestle with his homosexuality a bit more.

The two detectives are a fun interlude… I’m glad their story isn’t really all that involved (or it doesn’t seem to be, anyway). There, as in the real world, not everyone has something going on every friggin’ moment of their lives.

I agree, I am really liking this show, there is so much going on in every scene.

I missed what the connection is between Mackey and the blonde prostitute. She mentioned something that she and Mackey have “a bond stronger than sex”, or something like that…did I miss something or are we still trying to figure that one out?

I really like CCH Pounder’s character (the black female detective). She is such a great actress, all her scenes are great.

I think we are going to see more going on with Mackey’s wife. Could it be that she is only NOW beginning to suspect he is not such a good guy?? And it looks like one of the guys in Mackey’s crew is beginning to crack…the guy that threatened to shoot the BB player.

Couple of quick comments:

  1. Best surprise ending since the first show, and I was glad to get some insight on exactly how Vic was “controling” the streets. I’m also pleased that I have absolutely no clue how this can possibly play out.

  2. I’m developing empathy for Dutch. I’d like to think that if I were a detective, I’d be a badass like Vic, but I know that I’d actually be a nerd like Dutch. I would not, however, mercilessly butcher the Spanish language–the scene where he was reading Eduardo his rights en español killed me.

Blast, I was gonna say that. I can’t remember which scene it was, but at one point, they zoomed in on his face, and you could tell he was just thinking about everything that was collapsing around him.

I just hope they don’t bring it all to a head now, and leave us with nothing for next year.

I like Dutch.
