The Sopranos - 3/14/04

Great episode, especially with Adrianna’s part. The FBI/informant thing is starting to bear fruit (no pun intended). I guess no one goes after Chris and gets away with it. Though with their relationship on the rocks, Chris better not make her upset, or Ade might be willing to use her power in a more extreme fashion.

Buscemi was awsome and funny in his Miami Vice suit and the massages. Heh, any scene with Vito is great. I hope he stays straight as a counter part to the mob. My favorite new character is still Feech though.

And it also looks like a story left hanging in the wind is finally back with Ray Curto and the FBI.

A couple of great lines tonight…

Bobby when Carmine died: “Carmine was a great man…he invented point shaving”

Tony on seeing the rat pack painting: “that’s great…and I usually don’t like modern art.”

Buscemi is great and inscrutible at this point. “You’re crowding me” carried some great unspoken menace.

I thought Adriana’s revenge on the girl that kept hitting on Christopher was really funny and showed a sharp edge to Ade’s character.

The series hasn’t lost anything.

(There was no Melfti tonight. I’m still wondering where that’s going to go)

Tony is so paranoid – how can he even function?

Anyone have doubts about Tony B’s plans? Massage therapist? Don’t think so. He had 15 years to plan for his commencement. This is gonna be a great season.

I thought Tony would find a FBI “bug” in the rat pack painting…

Probably why he tossed it over the bridge.

Maybe I’m reading to far into this, but Steves character WAS a white suited Tony.

Agreed, Joey P. You can see the power struggle just waiting to happen. Buscemi’s character obviously felt he should NOT have been the one sent down the river. Or at least, not alone. I can’t wait to find out what the story is behind all that tension.

So, any bets on how long it’s going to take Rosalie to figure out what’s going on with Adrianna? That was a pretty cagey look she gave her…

This was great: At the movie discussion group, Carmella starts the tape and then the camera cuts to a long shot as everybody in the room stares transfixed at the words that come on the screen: FBI WARNING! And it seems to hang there just a little longer than necessary.

Cool stuff. And will they actually make it to that third film on the list?

Who was in the car with the agents near the end? I thought it was Patsy (the guy who told Tony about the FBI agents outside the diner), but my wife said it was not.

It wasn’t Patsy, I don’t remember the guy’s name though. Patsy is a great character, totally believeable as an evil sob. I hope he’s on more this season.

I thought it was the guy- don’t remember his name- from the first scene, in the diner w/the hat. The guy who gave Tony the painting.

I thought the guy in the car was Carmine’s son, the guy who was in the diner and who later met Tony wearing the M.O.S.T cap (again) which the FBI referred to as carrying the bug in the “button” on the top of the hat.

Best line of the episode had to be Rosalie’s “…Apostle Protection Program…” when talking about the famous snitch Judas.

The one I can’t remember is who was the other informant? I recognized the face, even sort of recalled the taped conversation that he was helping the FBI with, but I cannot recall the character or his previous role in the family/Sopranos story.

Okay, a little research and…

…the guy in the car was Jack Massarone and Carmine’s last name is Lupertazzi so I guess it was not his son, who is referred to as “Little Carmine”.

So… the question remains, who the hell is Jack Massarone?!? I have no recollection of him before this episode.

Oh, one other question, who were the guys in the car at the diner meet? I thought the photo the FBI showed to Aide of the 2nd guy (along with the dead guy) was one of the people who was in the car in the beginning? They alluded to them being Feds in the car later in the episode. Yet I though it was the same mob-guy from the photo earlier and am confused about why the other agent bolted upon confirmation that was a guy Aide had seen with the dead guy.

Of course, I could be confusing people. You know, them Eye-tal-ians all look alike.

Massarone was a pretty minor character before tonight’s episode. He didn’t rank high enough to merit mention on the cast list on hbo.com/sopranos. I didn’t recognize him at all, but a Google search reveals that he ran “Massarone Construction”, which was one of Tony’s companies. It was a major player in the Newark Esplanade/Museum of Trucking gig (naturally…the hat), which explains why Tony was so concerned about him flipping. Wish they had a bit of expository dialouge though…

A little fun fact, the actor who played Massarone, Robert Desiderio, played Gary, of Gary’s Old Towne Tavern on Cheers…

MeanJoe, the guys in the car were indeed FBI. I particularly noticed the “stubble” on the head of the agent in the driver’s seat, and paired it up when he showed up again in the briefing room, when the agents got their butts chewed out for not following up on the jury tampering charges.

As to the other informant-he’s one of the crew bosses under Tony. I don’t remember his name, but he’s been in several episodes, usually when Tony’s circling wagons. The conversation he was helping the agents with happened at the beginning of last season, in the back room of the Bing, I believe.

Thanks, clearly between the FBI guys, Massarone, Little Carmine, and the 2nd informant, I have managed to set a record in mis-identifying people in this episode. Perhaps next time they’ll indulge me by wearing name-tags. Haha!

What is the story with the medal that was attached to Carmine Sr.'s Rosary? There was a quick reference to “fundamentalist New-Jersy housewives” which apparently was directed to Johnny Sack’s wife.

I am officially Catholic but have not kept up with the latest issues…

After some research, I found out that it was Raymond Curto, one of Tony’s captains.

The other informant is Raymond Curto, who is one of Tony’s captains, or direct reports. Even though he’s a captain, he definitely is not an insider in the family itself. I don’t believe we’ve ever seen him have a one-on-one conversation with Tony, or a meet with him that didn’t include the other captains as a group. Case in point, he wasn’t invited to Christopher’s making ceremony, which would have been a boon to the FBI, had he been there with his wire on. We also don’t know why he flipped either, but maybe he was dealing H like Pussy was, to get extra money for his kid with MS. He’s been known to have flipped since season 3…he was shown talking to an FBI guy in the parking lot of an Office Depot before Livia’s funeral.

He was ranting about Opus Dei – isn’t that an offshoot of the Catholic Church? Fundamentalist Catholics?
