The Straight Dope gets mentioned in an online 80's lyric quiz.

So a member of a board at which I’m administrator posted a link to a quiz in which you have to fill in the blanks in lyric lines taken from 100 80’s songs. However, they sneak in Hotel Califonia:

After you fill out the quiz, it gives you the answers and some sometimes witty commentary. In the case of this Eagles hit, here is the commentary:

Personally, I’d like to believe that it’s both 1 and 2…

Although, I must admit, I had no clue what colitas was until the SD.

The URL for the quiz is here: http://www.yetanotherdot.com/asp/80s.html

Cool thing. Saw it already though, it was posted here a couple of weeks ago.

92.975 points. Since I was born in 1959, I imagine I’d have done better on a ‘70’s quiz, but worse on a’ 90’s-themed one. I knew many of the answers, took logical guesses on others, felt stupid about some of the ones I missed. Thanks for linking this!

That was a fun quiz, I actually did very well on it. I had to think about a few and go back to them, but I did better than I thought I would do.

I got 136 points, incidentally.

I went straight through, and got 102. I guess if I’d have gone back and thought harder about some of them I would have done better, but it was nice to see I’d gotten some of the more obscure ones.

130.5

Man, there were some hard ones in there.

There were a bunch that could “hear”, but couldn’t fill in too.

Heh. I knew that, only because I had to go search for the lyrics so I could learn to play it on the guitar.

52.6, and I’m upset that I scored that high, considering I spent most of that decade listening to Minor Threat and Scream.

104.55, but I missed four questions because of typos!

I did this recently too, courtesy of Moe, and scored 101.5 - go me!

I made an 82, I think. Respectable, as I was born smack in the middle of the 80s.

87 here. Though there were many I KNEW I knew, but I just couldn’t remember where (like the first bonus question - gah!).

I got 83. Pop junkie!

Although I missed a hard rock question and it told me I must have been born after 1985. Hah! Yeah right.

I took that quiz a couple of weeks ago since it was posted at LJ… and I’m a sucker for quizzes. My score was 161.5 … not bad at all.

Oh, and I already knew that song because that particular line ALWAYS gets mentioned on mondegreen sites. (which I was into a few years back)

I can’t believe I got pop songs right by guessing logical answers, and the METALLICA question wrong because I brilliantly spelled die “de”. I shouldn’t be doing this at 3 in the morning.

And I got a 45… grumble grumble…

It told me I must have been born after 1985 for missing Robert Palmer. Robert Palmer sucked. I should get bonus points for missing that! FTR, I was born in 1978. And I scored a measly 73.5. I probably could have squeezed a few more points out of it if I spent more time on some of them and I wasn’t drunk right now (among other things). Many of them had me going :smack: when I saw the answer.

My best score on a question (besides colitas) was 4 points for knowing that Southern girls talk in “California Girls.”

Many of them were really hard with just the words given. I’d have scored much higher with better hints.

Another problem was that some of the songs while released in the 80s, were cover versions that were released earlier (Smoking in the Boy’s Room, California Girls, Walk this Way). Sorry, but when I think California Girls I think Beach Boys, not David Lee Roth. Then he subtracted points because I was born before Woodstock? Dude, I didn’t give anyone polyester pants OR disco! So I went back and changed a few things and got 86.

I did really good on the New Wave ones, terrible on the Hair Metal and Dance music ones. Reflects my taste at the time.

Hmm. I was born less than two weeks after Woodstock. Wonder how it would have changed my score if I said I was born before?

I got a 114.
