The Straight Dope Secret Santa 2004 Exchange! New, with Improvements!

HEY!!!
Aren’t you supposed to wait until Christmas to open your presents?

Ha ha, I was reading your previous mail with great interest.
Yes yes, I admit it.
It was me.
I let the dogs out.
:stuck_out_tongue:

hmmm, always wanted to say that…

Anyways, I wanted to leave my name out (so as to truely torment you), but the post office was pretty strict.
But I’m so glad you liked the present.
And I hope you have a fantastic Christmas and a smashing New Year.

Wishing all Dopers lots of presents, cheer, joy and warm feelings!
Merry Christmas!

To my Secret Santa, unfortunately, I am away for the holidays, so I don’t think I’ll get your present in time, but rest assured I am very very grateful and happy and I’ll post here when I return home.

Well, well, well.

I was getting a little worried that my SS had forgotten me (or that the package had been destroyed in an attempt to stop those furriners from importing weird and unusual things).

But this afternoon I was in for a wonderful treat.

I’d been home for a few hours when my daughter came in with a package. We’d both been waiting for the mailman for the last couple of days and I think she delayed giving it to me just to prolong the agony.

We weren’t going to wait for Christmas eve (our traditional day of gifts) so we ripped right into the packaging.

What did we get? Well, weird and unusual indeed.

A Cowboy lunch box, my youngest has laid claim to this.
A Chuckle Beary corkstopper (he is sooooooo cute).
A Slim Chance corkstopper.
An 819th Red Horse Squardon tag, no idea what this really represents.
A jar of Huckleberry Jam.

There was also a tag from Austrlian Customs saying that the package had been opened to check on something suspicious (which I presume was the jam), but they hadn’t removed anything.

As soon as we saw the jam, both Jessica and I recited the Simpsons line by Nelson. “The thing about Huckleberries is once you’ve had fresh you’ll never go back to canned.”

It only took a second to get the lid off and the whole family stuck their fingers in to see what it tasted like. Hmmmmmmmmm. Huckle-icious. Can’t wait for breakfast time to enjoy this treat.

I would like to sincerely thank my SS from Montanna (you know who you are). It’s a wonderful gift full of things that I’ve never seen before and will be certain to enjoy.

Thankyouthankyouthankyou.

So, what do huckleberries taste like?

Good question.

In all honesty they taste like no berry I’ve tasted before.

The jam has small pips so it’s kind of like blackberry, but it has smooth skin so it’s also kind of like blueberry yet it tastes like neither and possibly like both but not like fruit of the forest which is a mixture of many berries.

Maybe someone who has tried fresh huckleberries can give a better description as I’m kind of stuck.

Oh, and it’s berry delicious

My Secret Santa package -finally- got in the mail yesterday. Now it’s going to Canada (from the US) so I don’t really know when it will get there, and I’m so sorry that it will not be before Christmas Eve. My daughter has been a -huge- help to me and it is through her efforts that the package was able to be mailed. On December 9th, I turned my left ankle and fell (at work), fracturing a bone in my left foot and badly bruising my right knee; I’ve been pretty much immobile since then, with a cast on the left leg to just below the knee and then my right leg developed cellulitis from all the bruising (I had cellulitis and DVT in that leg previously, about 5 years ago, so I guess it’s prone to happen again), so I pretty much had to stay off of my feet altogether. My right leg is doing much better now, and I have an appointment with my orthopedist on Monday to re-evaluate the fracture in my left foot … I’m hoping that maybe I’ll get a cane and be able to get around a bit more by then. It takes forever to get dressed even, let alone try to get anywhere… and you don’t realize how many places -steps- are until you have problems getting up (or down!) them!

At any rate, Happy Holidays, and the Secret Santa package is indeed in the mail. Really.

OK, the good news is, my present is wrapped, packed and in the mail.

The bad news is, they expect it to arrive by the end of the day, December 29.

Think of it as an extended Christmas!

Hugh Jass, I have been reading this thread every day and wondering when the hell you gift would arrive at your house. Somehow I missed your post from oh, FIVE FREAKIN DAYS AGO. I am glad you liked everything and yes I did read every single one of your posts to find out what kind of music and stuff that you like.
The only reason you were difficult to buy for was I couldn’t find anything with a personal touch. The artistic interpretations of skulls really threw me for a loop.

I am glad you recieved your package and enjoy your cd’s.
(And just out of curiosity, what hadn’t you heard yet?)

I was thrilled to open up my mailbox yesterday and see a squishy envelope in there addressed to meeeeeeeeee!!! And it jingled. It had a customs form on it (which made me very excited 'cause I’ve never received a gift from out of the country), so I turned it over so’s I wouldn’t ruin the surprise. When I got inside, I opened it up to find a slighly lumpy package (still jingling) wrapped in tissue paper with a funny little note written right on the paper: “Merry Christmas! Sorry for the rush job. I’m at the post office. --Rhaeven.”

I carefully unrolled the tissue paper to discover not one but TWO jingly snowman ornaments (a bell with a snowman head on it), one with my name on it and the other one says “Christmas warms the heart” on it. Aaaaaaaaand … chocolate! Canadian Hershey’s Pot of Gold, to be exact. I was even nice enough to let my husband have one of them.

Yay for SDMB Secret Santa!

OH - and I have now forgotten TWICE to mention my charity … the Equine Division of the Animal Protection Coalition. As far as I can tell, they are the only horse rescue organization in Indiana.

Oh, and I forgot to say, I’m leaving here at 5:00 tomorrow morning, and won’t be back for a week. So, I’ll be having my own extended Christmas when I get back!

My packet hasn’t made it to its destination yet it seems. It left here on 09 Dec and is still sitting in a departure lounge somewhere waiting for its flight to be called

My present arrive from Across The Pond. Haven’t opened it yet, am drooling like a St. Bernard at the thought.

Due to a huge fiasco, of which I was surprisingly not the cause, my SS giftee’s present Almost Wasn’t. However, the Great Cecil was watching out for us, and caused a Tiny Miracle of Coincidence to occur. The package will arrive at its destination slightly late, but full of happiness and cheer. A clue… it’s going to my home state. Hope you’re enjoying the snow!

And although I dropped my $5 in the Salvation Army bucket, I couldn’t resist the Defenders of Wildlife site. So extra karma points for giftee and I!!

YAY! I was very good and waited until 12:30 am, officially Christmas Day and opened my Secret Santa present while talking to a fellow SDMB person via AIM.

I GOT THE COOLEST ROCKS EVER! Yes, my secret santa rules and is psychic and knew just what I love. I love small, shiny, smooth, pretty rocks. And I got 6 of them! They were packaged as coal miners in this little box. Glued in their little coal mining cart. Did I mention they each have a set of eyeballs on them? These are my first rocks that can look back at me, kinda scary, but I’m getting used to it.

First I freed them from their wooden cart, because I want to hold them and play with them. They all have names too! We have Whitey, Orangey, Bluie, Greenie, Purply, and Reddy.

It looks like my secret santa ordered these guys from an ebay person. My rocks were nicely wrapped just like a real Christmas present with a bow even ! I was so happy!

Somehow, as a bonus or mistake? I also got this very cool purple stone bracelet. I have no idea what the stones are, but I’m pretending they’re magical and will bring me all good things this year. Like a new car, fame, fortune, handsome men, new furniture, etc.

Thank you again Secret Santa (I think I know your real name, but have no idea how to tie it to your screen name). I love my presents and you did an excellent job! ::Hugs and christmas smooches:::

Yay!, Just opened mine. Turned it on, and the baby ran off with it. Didn’t get it back for 20 minutes, but when I finally talked her into giving it to me, 'twas very cool. I’d read about these but actually playing with one is way way cooler. very ingenious.

Still don’t know who my secret santa is (My suspicion is it might be some hungry woman?).

You are so smart, MrFantsyPants! I saw in a previous post of yours that you had eye’d this gift and figured, why not? I was really hoping a family memeber didn’t see that you wanted this thing, was worried you’d get a double gift.

The lady I called to order this was so, so nice ! I think it was the cute Canadian accent she had. She offered to wrap it and put a card in it and everything!

I’m glad you wanted a toy for a gift, cause I think toys are important, even for grown ups.

Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Pick and choose, but have a great one!

Thank you squiggle for my Secret Santa(no we still can’t decipher it)from Minneapolis.I got a Minnesota calendar depicting beautiful sights of the state. And they managed to find 12  It will hang up my new home in January…I got a weird CD of pirate music(I think is Secret Santa’s band) and a small Santa bell.Although a piece of scarf came adrift fortunately it looks cool without it
Thanxxx

You’re welcome

I was sweating bullets because I was all set to get you this, and when I logged on to buy it found out that you wouldn’t get it until late January. (I’m showing it to you now in case you have a birthday or something soon; if you like it maybe you can drop hints to the fam or something.)

So I saw you liked rocks, logged onto ebay and found those. I figured they could double as a regional gift since they’re little coal miners and I live in West Virginia.

The bracelet was a bonus, as I didn’t order it. I’m thinking the ebayer I bought the rocks from either put it there accidentally, or maybe as a mitzvah since I left them good feedback on ebay and paid them quickly. I hope it doesn’t make you rash, if it does maybe it can be a rear view mirror hangy thingy for your car? (If not I’m a big believer in regifting.)

Anyhoo, Merry Christmas

The bracelet is great, just round stones and elastic string. I’m allergic to nickel. I really love this bracelet and I’m gonna wear it to keep me thinking positive thoughts. It kinda looks like tigers eye stone but purple. If you shoot me an email, I can reply to you and show you a picture of it.

I’m determined to make 2005 a great year for personal growth and I think having this bracelet is a good idea to keep me grounded and remind me of my goals. I just love rocks and stones.

Come on everyone else ! Open your presents ! I wanna see !

Email sent.

The ebayer I bought this stuff from specializes in rocks that … hmm how to put it? Rocks that have meaning? (Healing and stuff)

I looked on her store’s website but couldn’t find anything purple.

Nope, it was a great gift. I’d probably be buying one soon if you hadn’t come along.

Heh, Canadians, is there anything we’re not great at?
