Ok, so this is a little on the early side, but we got off to a late start last year and I have been seeing signs that some people are getting a bit antsy for an exchange of some kind.
Here’s how it works:
PM me. Please put your username in the subject line. In the message, include your real name, your shipping address, and whether you are willing to ship internationally.
Post in this thread with some ideas for people - favorite things, colors, stuff you are allergic to, etc. You might want to mention whether you are ok with getting homemade food items.
Plan to spend $10 or so, not including postage. If you want to go over, feel free, but remember that it is not expected. Please pack carefully, include your name and username, and send promptly for delivery before Christmas if possible. For some reason, it seems that packages going between the US and Canada are most likely to be delayed.
Post again to the thread when you have sent a package and when you have received one.
I will be keeping a running list of participants in this thread. If you have posted here and sent me a PM and your name somehow does not make it onto the list, let me know!
Please sign up by the end of November 30. I will get assignments out sometime the next day. I loved organizing last year’s. I am looking forward to seeing this thread grow!
I’m IN! Will PM right after I post this. LIKES: LOCAL stuff from wherever my Secret Santa lives. Yes, I will post internationally, too, and would be thrilled to have a “foreign correspondent”
Yay! Was just thinking the other day that it was getting toward that time of year. This is one of my favorite Doper traditions.
Favorite colors: purple and green. T-shirt size: 2XL (:() Love dark chocolate, fruity black teas – homemade food items great (only food allergy is to shellfish, which I assume wouldn’t be involved). Something local would be fun. Books and CDs always good (used is totally okay) – my Amazon wishlist is under my real name. Also like handmade type soap.
I haven’t played in a while, so I’ll give it a shot.
I’m OK with edibles if it involves chocolate, but not so much beyond that - if I list my dislikes, I start to sound fussy. Something made by the sender would be cool, too, or something representative of the senders area. But please no mugs - I just purged my cabinets of mugs and I still have too many.
T-shirt: 2XL
Socks/slippers - 9 1/2 (women’s - duh)
Not a big fan of SUVs or sports cars, but a nice comfy sedan would be OK.
I like animals, handmade stuff (food’s fine, I’m vegetarian but otherwise unfussy), local things, heritage seeds (probably fine to post to the UK), purple… I have a nickel allergy, but no others I’m aware of.
Oh, and don’t worry if it’s late getting here, it’s lovely to get back from Christmas at my family’s place to find one last parcel…
Like local stuff from where ever my secret santa calls home. No allergies (unless you’re thinking of sending me penicillin). Really don’t like dark chocolate (gives me migraines). Like stationary, cards, post cards etc. Rather not get T-shirts, but socks are fun. Soap, too. Black tea.
But I’m really not picky- I just know it’s nice to have some ideas to work with.
I like: books, chocolates (the darker the better), and if we go for clothes, a pair of socks (size 12 American) or a 2X - 3X t-shirt are ok. My favorite colors are dark (black, dark browns, very dark blue, things like that).
I want to play too. I promise this year I will include my correct postal code and not the one to my work, which confuses Canada post and causes delays.
I like dogs, the colour green, or purple, or black, cozy things, no allergies, would love local or homemade, (but don’t like jam). I also love cool thrift store finds, so used, or kitschy would delight me, too. If all other inspiration fails, chocolate is always welcome.
I like fancy teas (I’m sipping David’s Maple Sugar as I type), budgies, reading, dinosaurs and astronomy, anything to do with nature or the outdoors or science. I love Kelly green so much that if I see something I don’t even need but it’s in the right colour, I’ll buy it. I like chocolate and love anything maple flavour. T-shirt size ladies medium. I’m a vegetarian.
I love just about anything food, or from the sender’s area. Homemade is great. A local cookbook would be cool. Spices maybe. I also crochet, if you have an animal with a unique yarn that would be neat.
Really, just about anything. I have no allergies I know of.
Things: Books; CDs (both can be used, I’m not fussy); chocolate; tea; coffee; vintage items, especially postcards; things animal-oriented (especially exotic animals like elephants and octopuses); unique items local to where you live; library-oriented items. I’m an huge Anglophile & Celtophile. Fandoms: Sherlock (both canonical and BBC); Tolkien; Shakespeare; Supernatural; Harry Potter; Welcome to Night Vale; Discworld; Marvel (LOKI’D).
Colors: Blue, nearly any shade
Sizes: Women’s size small for tops, feet size 5 to 5.5 American
Allergies: I’m fine with homemade goodies, but heads-up – I am allergic to all fish & shellfish as well as anything with nuts in it. I’m not allergic to anise / black licorice but I don’t like it, so I’ll just pass it along to my dad if you send me some.
Hurrah! This is such an highlight of my holiday season, both the giving & receiving!!!
I’m in. I haven’t done one of these in a long time.
I love homemade stuff of all sorts. But I can’t eat gluten, which makes me a destroyer of all fun and happiness. I also hate mint to an astonishing degree.
My favorite color is red, but I don’t dislike any color. I’m into reading, poetry (yes, you can write me a poem!), baseball, science, bluegrass (wow, it’s been a long time since I’ve listened to bluegrass. I need to change that), opera (same story), art, cooking, games, and bowling. I have a magpie nature and I live with a husband and two cats, so shiny things will always be a hit! And even though I live in LA where it’s warm, I still get cold and we go to hockey games, so fuzzy mittens or socks or earmuffs or whatever aren’t wasted on me.
I’ll start off easy: I collect pens from places I’ve been, and I have a nice lil collection of stuff from dopers, so the only straight-up request I have is please include a local pen!!
Other than that, any other local product is fine including homemade. I love sports (football especially), tshirt is a medium or a large
I love to read. Especally murder/mystery/serial killer books. The grislier the murder, the happier I am. Also love behind-the-scenes books like Moneyball, Late Night Wars, etc. There’s an SNL one and a Marvel Comics one that seem fun
For a late 20s guy I have way too many stuffed animals, but I like them and they’re my friends. If you have a local attraction that has a fun animal with it I’d love to see it.
Mostly I’d like something that I can say is from my internet friends!
Whee! I’m in!
Things that work for me: A holiday ornament specific to where you live would rock, knitted slippers (sz 10), anything Sherlock / Harry Potter / minions, jams or jellies, hard candy, taffy, funky pens. My favorite colors are oranges, purples, greens and black. If you feel like tossing in something for the felines that run my house, that would be lovely.
While chocolate would be lovely, I cannot have. Ditto tea and coffee.
I like cats, other animals, music (I play clarinet/percussion/ukulele), and milk chocolate without nuts. I could always use more coffee mugs. My favourite colour is blue, but I’d appreciate receiving things in any colour, really.
Like everyone else in the thread, I like the local stuff. Like Nayna Mrs. SMV and I collect magnets from our travels, so one from your area would be welcome. Chocolate (dark or milk, it’s all good) bread, baked goods - I’ve never met a carbohydrate I didn’t like. Fruitcakes - yes, I’m that one guy who actually likes them.
What else? T-shirt size is XL or XXL (see carbohydrate comment above). Socks, size 9 US, the more obnoxiously colored the better. Metal or leather keychains, pen knives, hats. I love fountain pens, but they’re pricey.
If I end up with a Secret Santa from overseas, I would love - I’m quite serious - a rock from your area. Especially if that rock is associated with your town (like marble from Carrara, Italy, or jet from Whitby, England). Fossils and crystals also appreciated.
I’ve never done this with Dopers before, so I think it’s time I did! I will PM shortly. Like many other folks have said already, I’d really like either something local from wherever my Secret Santa lives, or if they’re crafty, a handmade item. I am fine with international shipping.
