I think Shirvell is in a different league from people like Craig and Pastor Long and George Rekers etc.- those guys are mostly hypocrites with perhaps a side order of self delusion, but mostly they’re just corrupt assholes. Shirvell is ***batshit insane ***, the closest thing to the Phelps family outside of the Phelps family. If he doesn’t end up strapped with explosives and trying to fuck a raccoon in the next few days he’ll probably move to Topeka and be welcomed to Westboro Baptist and given a 14 year old she-Phelps as his child bride.
As a note, although Shirvell did his undergrad at UM, he did not attend law school here. His JD is from Ave Maria School of Law, a super super conservative Catholic law school that I thought was still located here in Ann Arbor, but Google informs me has now moved to Naples, Florida. (bzuh?) It was founded by that crazy dude who also founded Domino’s Pizza.
I used to know someone who went to Ave Maria and he told me about how he was beginning to realize that homosexuality wasn’t totally evil, and how he could never say that around school because it would be such a radical concept to his classmates. (Come to think of it, Shirvell may have been one of his classmates; the timing is about right.)

I think poor Shirvell is so closeted he doesn’t even realize he is gay. Someone recently posted that for these guys, other gay people are clearly dangerous and out to get the good “straight” Christian man to participate in “depravity”. They don’t understand that real straight guys don’t have the “thoughts” that would make that other guy over there seem tempting and all cute and stuff. I think I would have nothing but pity for him if he wasn’t also so clearly dangerous.
This is the only way for some people to come out. It takes some cojones to come right out and say “I’m gay.” When you don’t have sufficient cojones, you’ve got to come out of the closet through the back door (as it were).

He’s a devout Catholic along the lines of Mel Gibson; I don’t know if he’s a sedevacantist, but he’s definitely a control freak, HYPER conservative, anti-gay and general right wingnut.
Ditto that. I fear that Armstrong is in real danger from this loon; he’s clearly going farther and farther off the rails. And you have to figure that in his twisted mind, losing his job over this will be ALL ARMSTRONG’S FAULT rather than the consequence of his own actions. This level of obsession and fury is the kind of crazy that gets people killed.
I’ve tried to learn something about Shirvell’s past but there’s not much available with regular googling. He tried to get his church to boycott a pizza place in 2005 because there was a gay pride sticker in the window and the year before that he heckled a pro-choice political candidate, and he went to Ave Maria in Florida and before that U of MI. I found something where in 2007 he was accusing the Alumni Assn of Ave Maria (I believe) of covering up a child pornography scandal involving a Father Orsi. Shirvell seems to be about 30, but that’s about where what’s easily learned about him ends as for every article before the Armstrong case there are about 500 articles about the Armstrong case.
One of his many allegations and complaints about Armstrong is that he’s “elitist” and a spoiled rich kid, which I’ve no idea if it’s true or not but it would imply Shirvell’s from a working class background. OTOH he’s batshit insane so if his own dad was a billionaire he could still find a way to hold it against Armstrong. The allegations of Armstrong’s racism are based on the fact he belongs to the Order of Angell which at one point usedNative American artifacts and paraphernalia in their ceremonies- this in a different time long before Armstrong was ever even associated with them and when it fact they were called the Michigamua Society. (Gerald Ford was one of several well known Michiganians to have been a member of this society.)
If Armstrong’s parents really are well to do then I think now might be the time to give Junior the credit card and have him go visit family or friends in Oregon or New Mexico or some other place that isn’t anywhere near Michigan until Monday when the judge hears the petition. (If he needs the address or phone number of his out of state distant relatives I’m sure he can ask Shirvell, who probably has them on speed dial.)

Tom Monaghan is no more a right-wing nutjob than any typical Catholic priest, except he has money which he uses to advance a political agenda which tends to line up with the Catholic beleif system, such as being Pro-Life and against SSM. Just what about him is not the way a devout Catholic would behave?
If you “read” his “blog” he uses “inappropriate” quotes quite “frequently,” too.
