Well I just saw it on IMAX and seriously it was awesome. Shooting giant robot ninjas in the eye!? how could you not like that:confused: I also don’t get people saying the plot was confusing or a mess.
Sure, if you’re not an idiot. The reviewer claims “A true feminist film demands the destruction of the previous model”, which apparently requires that “They may exhibit all the strength and intelligence of their male brethren, but they will be denied the rewards for one reason, and one reason only: They are women.”
More or less my take.
That said, while he whiffed, he did it swinging for the fences. In a lot of ways, Sucker Punch felt a lot like the spiritual (and to a certain extent, structural) descendant of Heavy Metal. There are worse things to aspire to.
And while there were elements of the script (and acting) that could have been done better, the action-y bits were good enough in my book to make up for a lot of the flaws and blemishes.
I’m a dude. I don’t care about this film.
But does anybody really believe that most, if not all, films aren’t made with a specific demographic group in mind. Is it really so crazy to you that a movie might be made to appeal to a demographic that is not your own.
Could it be better? Fuck yes. The story is thin and the characters are none-dimensional. And yes, the action falls short when you don’t care about anyone involved.
But if you’re not here for the eyecandy, this movie isn’t for you. The movie is completely upfront about what it is and what it isn’t, and delivered on that. If you manage to be disappointed, you’ve got nobody to blame but yourself.
I went into the movie with pretty high expectations and was not disappointed. Yes, it’s a thinly-plotted popcorn flick with lots of pretty explosions, but damn, it was a lot of fun to watch. The Blu-Ray is already going on the wish list. My wife–who was not thrilled in the least about seeing it, but agreed to accompany me anyway–enjoyed it, too, so it’s not just for dudes.
That said, I completely understand that it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But some of the professional reviews I’ve seen this morning are waaaaay over the top in their criticism. It’s like the critics saw a completely different film.
The comparison above to Heavy Metal is spot-on; Sucker Punch clearly owes a lot to it, as it does to Kill Bill. And ignore my earlier comments about concerns over Scott Glenn’s performance. He nailed it.
It’s fantasy, for heaven’s sake. I don’t care how practically dressed you are going into battle, when you’re fighting Godzilla-sized samurai monsters it doesn’t much matter what you’re wearing, except whatever you’re wearing or not, you should look cool. Seriously, a practical pair of BDUs and a helmet isn’t going to make much difference when you’re engaged in over the top superhero battle.
I thought it was awesome! After seeing it last night I must say that the costumes were 100% appropriate based on the plot. The plot was thin to be sure, but it was very clear from the first few moments of the film that the plot was not going to be fabulous and the movie was pretty okay with that. The fighting scenes were amazing and worth every penny of the cost of the ticket.
Tabby wife’s friend summed up the movie to tabby wife thusly “it’s a movie about 5 blond girls in tight leather clothing”. Sooooo… I don’t think i’m going to be allowed to watch this movie. >.>
even Scott Glenn made the offhand “shoes” comment. it was referring to the fact she should have taken them off, but i also thought it made a sly wink that high heels are not too real life combat worthy, but damn if they don’t look stylish.
I don’t know if it makes a difference for those who were worried about the main character being too young, but her stated age in the movie is 20.
Allowed?
I Just got back from it and I thought it was insanely awesome.
Man it seems this movie is getting panned bigtime. I guess haters gonna hate:p. I’m gonna ask my sister and niece what they think about it, they just went to see it. and no I didn’t recommend it. My niece wanted to see it, but hell she also loves Bayonetta and Moulin Rouge.
One thing a lot of the reviews mention is the lack of tension in the fights. I just kinda thought they were superpowered in the dream world. kinda like spiderman they could get hurt, but it would take an awful lot to do it.
I kept thinking of Heavy Metal while watching this, too – though HM had better characters, more wit, and a better narrative (HM had a narrative?? --exactly).
As a video game, comic book, sci-fi/fantasy fan, I thoroughly enjoyed watching the movie. The soundtrack is spectacular. My lizard brain approves.
The rest of my brain needs a good scrubbing, though. If they had edited out all the dialogue entirely, the movie would have been 1000x better.
I went into this movie expecting to like it and left the theater mostly underwhelmed. The soundtrack was well-done - I particularly liked the “White Rabbit” cover - and the fantasy sequences were well-made, but the frame story was confusing, full of holes, and a big letdown in the end.
It’s difficult to tell how much is real and how much is just happening in Babydoll’s brothel fantasy - are we meant to believe that the patients are actually being pimped out to visiting VIPs? Are we meant to believe that The cook stabbed a patient in the stomach and killed her, and that Blue actually executed two of his patients in front of a dozen witnesses and nothing was done about it? Who are “the mayor” and “the high roller” supposed to be? How does a lobotomist who disagrees with the procedure he’s been asked to do not ever speak about it with the person who signed off on it?
And the twist at the end, that God/the guardian angel/whoever he was told Babydoll what to do and then left her, the innocent, victimized pawn, to be turned into a vegetable, and allowed three other girls to be murdered, so that Sweetpea, who didn’t even want to escape, could go home? That’s some messed-up, Touched By An Angel “I’m going to let your husband abuse you for years so that you can inspire people with your paintings” kind of BS, wrapped in Babydoll’s fauxlosophic narration about “This is YOUR story”.
And this might be a minor nitpick, but if the story is supposed to be set somewhere in the '50s or '60s, why was the gate guard in the climax listening to an iPod?
In the end, i’d much rather have seen an entire movie based around the WWI sequence, than the movie that I saw. Why couldn’t Zack Snyder have made THAT movie?
PS: I loved the Freddie Mercury 'stashe Blue had in the brothel sequences.
you know this movie reminds me of listening to old albums, before the internet. When it was mysterious. You had to make your own backstory of the songs, the band, what the lyrics meant. Some of those heavy metal stories where the same. Take the Rock Opera or Ranxerox series. you kinda filled in the blanks. Was Ranxerox the only of his kind. the crazy star wars universe of Rock Opera. even the movie who constructed that big ass smiley face spaceship. Ministry the band use to scare the fuck out of me. nowadays it’s all google search away. This Movie is the closest to that feeling nowadays. sometimes when you explain too much it loses that.
I thought the movie was very good.
It has a plot.
It’s better than Inception at being a reality bending film. Not quite as good as Brazil. It’s funner than Brazil.
I had no difficulty in telling what was happening in what level of reality.
Oof. I wanted to like it and the most I can say is that I don’t hate it. The characters and plotting were just as bad as I expected and in some ways worse. The wiseman character was the worst though. It was as if all his lines were written by a random fortune cookie message generator.
The visuals were okay. The steampunk zombie battle was cool enough, but the plotting of the dragon battle seemed lazy and by the time they got to the robot-train battle, it kind of felt like they were running out of ideas both visually and thematically.
The worst sin of all, was that it wasn’t fun enough. Bad storylines and decent visuals can be redeemed by a sense of playfulness and fun, but the overall film was just glum and depressing.
I am going for the purpose of seeing awesomely hot chicks awesomely fight awesome monsters & machines & malefactors (had to keep the alliteration going). If I see these things, I will be happy. I have read nothing here to convince me I will not see these things.
However, I will report back if my opinion changes.
