I presume most of you are, like me, frustrated at having the boards go down on a twice-daily or so basis, and having to log back in when it finally comes back up. But before you vent your frustration, take a minute and think – there’s a lot more flexibility in VBB 3.0.x and when the board is up, it seems to be moving significantly faster than before. Somebody at the Chicago Reader decided to pay whatever Jelsoft is asking for the upgrade. And the dedicated team of IT guys there, led by jdavis, have been doing their level best to get the system running stably – while leaving it up so that we don’t miss our daily dose of Dope. Take the frustration you feel, and then imagine how much more frustrating it must be to be on the receiving end of those expressions of frustration – and having the responsibility to bring the software back up every time it crashes.
I think we all owe somebody – Ed Zotti? his superiors? – a vote of thanks for deciding to make the upgrade – and a really big round of thanks and applause to the Reader’s IT guys for making it work.
Well said, Polycarp. If it weren’t for all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes we wouldn’t have the SDMB to enjoy and take part in. Yay for the techies and the Chicago Reader management and staff!
Judging by how incredibly long it took for this box to come up when I hit the Reply button, that latter part just isn’t true today, and half the smilies aren’t showing and they are all white and I have to keep logging in even though I haven’t turned off my computer and this has just not been a good day all around.
But that’s not why I’m responding.
The first part intrigues me. What is the flexibility that VBB 3.0 offers, and in what ways will we notice it in the future when things start to work again?
C’mon honey, let’s see that pretty smile. That’s better. Who’s the bestest girl in the world? That’s right, you are. Yes you are.
All better now? Go ban some meanies, sweetie, you know that always makes you feel happy.

Thanks very much to those lovely lovely techies who are redecorating the hamster habitats. A new jingly toy over here, some fresh wood shavings there, shampoo and flea dip for the the sweet little critters… much appreciated!
