The Ten Commandments in Schools...

I’m tired of the freaks who act like the Ten Commandments aren’t an enfraction of the Establishment Clause. If I recall my Exodus 20:2-3, and I know I do because my Bible is sitting in front of me, “I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage [sounds kinky]. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” Hmm… Now, if we post that in a public building, it SURE sounds like it’s “respecting an establishment of religion” to me. How is a little Muslim girl gonna worship Allah when she’s staring at “Thou shalt have no gods before me?” This first commandment is, to me, the worst transgressor, but there are others. Don’t worship graven images? Isn’t that a main part of the Hindu faith? Keep the Sabbath holy? Do I even need to comment on that? Hell, there’s even an infraction on free speech buried in Exodus here. Don’t take the Lord’s name in vain! Now, I’m sure no one is gonna have major problems with some of the basic Commandments like “Thou shalt not kill,” but it’s still TOTALLY a violation of the Establishment clause. Think about it, Christians. How would you feel if they decided to put parts of the Quran on the walls of your children’s classrooms? Especially if they put up the parts about how Jesus Christ was NOT the Son of God, but just a prophet (albeit a great one) of Allah?

Been there, done that.

Cruelty-
Okay, I’m obviously a newbie here, just trying to get a handle on the pit, so I apologize for being shakey at this…
But, I do want to agree with you on this. The idea of religion interested me enough to send me back to school for a degree in it–which signifies nothing in respect to being some sort of authority, I’m not. What I did learn though, is that most of the ‘kindler, gentler’ aspects of just about any religion can and have been mutilated by people who are uncomfortable with the idea of any body believing anything different from them. This whole Commandments issue is a flagrant example of this. Yes, I’m a Christian…but, what’s the point? It doesn’t mean jack to most people that I am. And it shouldn’t. It should mean something to ME. And my respect for peoples’ choice in belief (or lack thereof) doesn’t mar mine. I have to say that, frankly, I’m more than a little ashamed of the idea of shoving anything down anybody’s throat. Your little Muslim girl doesn’t deserve that. No one does.
As for the Commandment about the Lord’s name…that goes back to the time when people believed that they could summon a god to do something for them by invoking the god by name. Like, “In the name of Yahweh, I bring a curse on your house.” Or something like that…anyway, it was a way of telling people that they couldn’t use their belief to harm others or get their god to do their bidding. Learned that in Hebrew–put a whole new spin on that Commandment.
Thanks for letting me spout. Whew!

Okay, guys, focus!

Trout Mask’s link was to the Great Debates thread on this subject. Here’s a link to the Pit thread on this subject. http://boards.straightdope.com/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000951.html

Generally speaking, it’s better to join a thread in progress than to start a whole new one. Everybody else is over at the other threads, talking. Nobody’s going to come over here, too, and say the same thing twice.

So, pick one. You want to copy & paste your posts in this thread, that’s fine, too.

The difference is, in the Pit thread you can say “fucking Ten Commandments”, in the GD thread you can’t.

“Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast!” - the White Queen

Has anyone been to a public school recently and counted how many Posters / Slogans Building Rules contain wording along the lines of Respect Each Other / No Put Downs / This is your School behave in a manner to show pride … OK what does that have to do with the Big Ten Cs . …
Schools already try to teach morals / standards of behavior etc. Placing Neon signs in front of every school or having Charleston Heston reciting them in 10 lanaguages over Loud Speakers will not address the real issues. Nice Diversion by Politicians & “Religious Leaders” so they can take sides and do absoluletly NOTHING…

Terry Great Sig line … Sorry to use this worthwhile topic to increase my post count and get to double digits while testing this new system
