A few years ago, before I started lurking, and long before I started posting, there was a thread that made me decide to go ahead and register.
I don’t remember who the OP was or the title. It was a rant about costume rentals. The OP worked at a costume rental place and was complaining about the stink that one particular customer left in a costume.
As for the first thread I posted in… It was about female celebrities who haven’t aged well. My contribution was Goldie Hawn. I was imediately blasted by an enraged Goldie fan. And I didn’t post again for several days.

My first post was in a random newbie thread. I went the safe route.
I can’t remember, and a search only took me back to December 2005.
Whatever it was, it must have been a friendly, non-threatening thread, probably in MPSIMS – this board can be intimidating to a newbie. Or even an oldbie.
I don’t remember the first thread I posted in. But I shall never forget my introduction to these boards. I wasted most of a morning coming back and laughing at it.
As best I can find, my first thread contribution was in What’s your favorite instrumental? on Page 2. If this wasn’t THE first post I made it was at least done in my second day here. I vaguely recall some “welcome the newbies” thing at that time, too. I did reply to that as well.
The search I did looks like some of those early threads may have been dumped by now. I can’t prove that but I’d bet on it.
IIRC, my first post was to a CS thread. Buffy more than likely. My first thread was a Pit thread railing against virus writers. Nothing momentous in any case.
Ah, I remember it like it was yesterday. My first thread was Scylla’s infamous Nazi Groundhog thread; I read the entire thing, giggling like a loon, then I registered.
I don’t really remember which was my first post; I think it was in a telemarketer thread, where I made the mistake of pointing out that they were just people with shitty jobs, and got trounced for it.
My first post was in a thread about the baseball All Star Game that ran out of players. I’d been lurking for some months by then; I have no earthly idea what thread drew me to the board.
I’d joined in Nov’04 to throw my 2¢ on one of Cecil’s columns, then lurked until July’05 when a friend sent me a link to a thread with a title something like “you know you’re getting old when…” - since then I spend an average of 3 hours a day, sometimes much much more, no the boards.
The ol’ search function tells me that my first post here was on July 5, 2004, in an IMHO thread about commonly mispronounced words that Only Mostly Dead started a couple of weeks before I joined. Later that day I posted in a Pit thread, and thus my SDMB presence was established.
I have no idea how I found this place, but I know I only lurked for a day or two before joining – I’m not much for watching without participating, and the price was reasonable so I figured “what the hell.”
The first thread I started was on July 19th of that year: it was in GQ, and asked about the unfocused stare that many blind people have. I never did get an answer to that question.
After years and years of lurking, I jumped on board dropping a joke into this thread. Then DeVena welcomed me to the site, and then (naturally) I killed the thread.
It was a comprehensive Karate Kidthread that drew me in. I had some answers so I signed up. I translated all of the hidden moves within Daniel-san’s chores from the first Karate Kid movie, giving the corresponding Japanese term and description from its tradition within the Internal School of Okinawan Karate.
I guess the archive doesn’t go back that far? I’ve tried to find it but every search was fruitless.
My SDMB cherry was impaled by a hurrican Katrina thread. There was a guy that had done some disaster relief and i was asking about the logistics of such problems and what it’d take to fix said problems. Good times for everyone.
Mine was a GQ thread about funeral practices of different religions. I wrote a long post about the Shinto funeral I’d been to, and promptly killed the thread.
My first post was a new thread (!) in the Comments on Straight Dope Columns forum where I mentioned that “Blinded by the Light” was about masturbation. One of the mods came in and supplied the link I didn’t know enough to include, and then the thread died. An auspicious start I must say.
