When I was stationed in Mannheim from 1979 to 1982, living off base, my Saturday routine was to head to the base laundromat and watch the military TV there while I did my laundry. After a few months, I finally had enough money saved up to buy a TV set of mine own. It was a pain because to watch German shows, the set had to be set for one type of reception, and to watch the Armed Forces Network, I had to change the setting with the handy switch on the back of the damn set.
For the newspaper, Stars & Stripes was a lifesaver whenever we deployed, both when I was in the Army and when I was in the Navy. On deployment, we got the thing for free. The toilet smear currently occupying Oval Office, of coure, has no idea that newspaper is not a party mouthpiece like China Daily is for the Chinese Communist Party. By law, Stars & Stripes has independent editorial control. And it is available online. I retired from the Navy twenty years ago this past February and still read that online, especially the Sunday comics section. I even use the comics as material for my classes in Beijing from time to time.

DumpsterFire is using the same tactics as during the Repulsican debates; yell loudly and often. Make headlines. Get his name on the front page. Any publicity is good publicity. An example was a recent Hawaiian Star Advertiser issue with a typical “Trump said this” but fact check said otherwise. Not that he was lying, just “off”. Meanwhile, around page 4, Biden and Harris were talking policy and programs for the country.

My last deployment was in 2009. At that location, internet access was basically limited to a couple of areas, and we were not permitted personal phones at work. Personal phones are also not permitted in certain secure areas. Stars & Stripes worked everywhere.
