I think the 90s Yugoslavia is a somewhat apt comparison actually.
Just to clarify, I realize there’s a world of difference between the forces that pulled Yugoslavia apart and what’s happening in the US now - not in any way saying it’s the same. But different the nationalist and extremist rhetoric coming from some of the rank-and-file politicians has some similar hallmarks. The polarization has some similarities. The history is what made Yugoslavia so toxic in a way that can’t be replicated just anywhere.
