I have a prediction that I want to get on the record here: Trump will commute Lisa Montgomery’s death sentence to life without parole. He will do this for her, and no one else, because she is a white woman and it will play well with (predominantly white) evangelical Christians who will herald it as an act of extraordinary compassion. The mark of a True Christian.
Meanwhile, on the left, there will be some (entirely appropriate) grumblings (but no more, and not for long) from progressives who are opposed to the death penalty in general, but find it irksome that Trump chose to exercise his commutation authority specifically on a white woman, and no one else, after having gone out of his way to preside over a record number of executions in the final months of his presidency.

^ This. I will grant that many Congressional Republicans dread having Trump follow through on threats to back a primary candidate against them. But it’s a fact, as you point out, that this dread does NOT lead to 100% voting Trump’s way.
So, “cowardice” doesn’t really work as an excuse. Their unpatriotic self-dealing in putting their own personal interests before their country is more nuanced than that one word allows.
