I think he’s exactly the same, just reacting to a different set of circumstances. But it’s really a potato/potahto type of situation. He’s always been fucking monstrous, and no-one who was willing to work for him eight months ago–or eight days ago, as Mulvaney was–has any business drawing these fine distinctions as an excuse.

Well, I think about it this way: while the Trumpsters are hitting Democrats as usual, what is unusual is that now the Republican party is also the target of the Trumpsters. Now, as per the latest from PEW, there are roughly 44% of voters that are or lean republican. If the latest poll that you are talking about is correct, then a bit less than half of those are Trumpsters with no redeeming quality.
Not big enough to counter Democrats, but big enough to become a perennial monkey wrench to the Republican party leadership that just came to disown Trump.
