To be somewhat fair to Mulvaney, I’ve heard plenty of Trump supporters/apologists say “don’t pay any attention to what he says” over the years, as if somehow that excuses it. So it’s not just him. The article is spot on about how people delude themselves.

Good point. I’m not excusing her, just reporting the news. Frankly Wolkoff seems like a bit of a sketchy character herself, but I wouldn’t dismiss her observations out of hand.
No one has to excuse her; she takes responsibility for her role in the administration in that very interview.
I’m the one that’s been saying Trump’s a gangster and a conman and since 2015. I remember, before a debate, posting that the debate thing was pissing me off because it was like watching Warren Buffet and Bernie Madoff debate financial policy. It’s shouldn’t have been that hard to see.
But we didn’t have a choice and we had to accept him as President even though he was utterly corrupt.
I see the conundrum if you’re in the government. I’m going to be a little fair.
You need to pretend you don’t see it to keep your job. You even need to break the law yourself to keep your job. Not big laws, you tell yourself - just those fussy little ones that make it so hard to get a contract or two for his friend’s company. You tell yourself it’s no big deal because the contracts were at a fair price even if they bypassed the process. You know you aren’t supposed to do any campaigning while in this trip, but he asked you to talk up his campaign to these people. Everybody does it. This is how corruption starts.
Then maybe when it got to be a little more than these tiny little things, nothing burgers as an individual act but collectively destructive to the integrity of the system.
Everyone has their breaking point. Maybe you keep your mouth shut about a couple of these pressure campaigns and quit. Maybe you go a little farther down the rabbit hole and quit. Maybe you love it, you think of breaking these administrative laws as justified and are gleeful about defeating the deep state. But if
But Trump is a gangster and he’s been running the White House like a gangster. No way they missed it, but they may have felt that if they left, their replacement would break big laws, so it was a public service to for them stick around and only break little laws.
I don’t know if you really think business inside the White House has been conducted honestly and with integrity. I don’t, because there’s a megalomaniacal gangster in the White House, holding half of Congress hostage by threatening to destroy their careers and …in the past month or so…having his followers threaten them and their families if they don’t do what he says. Except for the congressman he put in the office to help him overthrow the government.
God, I really hope you ( the collective you, not addressed at you specifically) are starting to see this. It’s been tweaking me for five years.
