I’m guessing that his train of “thought” was something like:
China’s response in the trade war has been interpreted by some as causing the most pain in areas of the country that are most pro-Trump
Therefore, China is targeting Trump personally
Therefore, China is meddling in the mid-terms. QED.
And I think he talks about Elton John at his rallies a lot. He’s his go-to celebrity, when he wants to talk about big crowds.
I think it illustrates the fact that he is so amoral and unable to make decisions based on moral considerations that he can’t imagine other people doing so. He is right that he is good for business for the NYTimes and these other outlets but that doesn’t mean they are going to decide who to endorse on other, ethical considerations. That is just so foreign to him that he can’t even imagine it.
Plus the ‘Rocket Man’ thing. Interesting that his mind connected in that way.
I was watching clips of him last night on Colbert. He appeared ghastly. I understand he was a bit late for his “performance” but the makeup person screwed up (more than usual). The orange face paint was on but it wasn’t blended into his eye area where he must have been wearing goggles. It was orange then white sections around the eyes. Never seen it that bad before.

The article I linked to throws into stark relief thump’s deteriorating mental state as displayed in his press conference. Not surprising, but to see it all summarized like that makes you weep for this country. Again.
Once again proving he’s an idiot who can’t think things through.
What happens if he does convince his followers that China is hacking the election? There will be an outcry for an investigation. And what will be the outcome of an investigation of foreign interference in American elections? It’ll find evidence of how the Russians have helped Trump.
Trump should learn the lesson that smart criminals know; never call attention to your crimes. Even to accuse somebody else of that crime. It’s not enough for people to think that you’re innocent; ideally, you don’t want it to even occur to people that the crime is possible.
