The friction came to a head in early 2017 when senior officials offered Trump charts and graphics laying out the numbers and showing a “hockey stick” spike in the national debt in the not-too-distant future. In response, Trump noted that the data suggested the debt would reach a critical mass only after his possible second term in office.

“Yeah, but I won’t be here,” the president bluntly said, according to a source who was in the room when Trump made this comment during discussions on the debt.

Great talking point for those who don’t understand finance. Horrible talking point for those who do. Those who do see a list like this and think, “but what was the percentage decline?”, which is far more important. None of the top 20 %age declines have occurred during this administration.

Please don’t take this as sticking up for Shit-Gibbon. Those who work or have worked in the business, like me, have always hated the news focus on the point number versus the much more important percentage change.

I had to check the exact caption, but a Trumpster idiot Facebook friend posted a picture a few hours ago of Melania Trump with her hand over her heart (not from today, though).

The caption?

“The one thing Michelle Obama never did…”

And the comment below the pic was: “AND… isn’t it nice to ALSO be able to say merry Christmas again⁉️”

I would think that this is just something posted on FB to trigger anti-Trump/pro-Obama people given the timing (and maybe the original is, or is a spoof from a group like America’s Last Line of Defense), but the guy I know who reposted this is one of the dumbest guys I know personally–I may have mentioned he didn’t know the difference between 2 am and 2 pm as a 19 year-old (quote: “I always get confused by those.”)–and probably believes this to be true. Now he’s a 50 year-old, white, blue collar, rabidly anti-liberal guy who feels validated and vindicated by Trump. SAD!

Instead, Trump appears to appeal more to men who are secretly insecure about their manhood. We call this the “fragile masculinity hypothesis.” Here is some of our evidence.

Measuring fragile masculinity poses a challenge. We could not simply do a poll of men, who might not honestly answer questions about their deepest insecurities. Instead we relied on Google Trends, which measures the popularity of Google search terms. As Seth Stephens-Davidowitz has argued, people are often at their least guarded when they seek answers from the Internet. Researchers have already used Google search patterns to estimate levels of racial prejudice in different parts of the country. We sought to do the same with fragile masculinity.

We began by selecting a set of search topics that we believed might be especially common among men concerned about living up to the ideals of manhood: “erectile dysfunction,” “hair loss,” “how to get girls,” “penis enlargement,” “penis size,” “steroids,” “testosterone” and “Viagra.” (With the exception of “how to get girls,” these are Google “topics” rather than individual search terms. For instance, the topic “erectile dysfunction” includes searches for “erectile dysfunction,” “ED” and “impotence.”)

We found that support for Trump in the 2016 election was higher in areas that had more searches for topics such as “erectile dysfunction.” Moreover, this relationship persisted after accounting for demographic attributes in media markets, such as education levels and racial composition, as well as searches for topics unrelated to fragile masculinity, such as “breast augmentation” and “menopause.”

In contrast, fragile masculinity was not associated with support for Mitt Romney in 2012 or support for John McCain in 2008 — suggesting that the correlation of fragile masculinity and voting in presidential elections was distinctively stronger in 2016.

Hehe! Trump pretends he’s a tough guy and his male supporters are insecure and identify with that because they know deep down they are not. They’re the real male snowflakes in this country. Too bad we don’t have the data to see if smaller-than-average hand size is positively correlated with Trump support.
