Jim Webb is OUT!
Which, naturally, has got Fox all revved up. Their headline is “Trump Fires Back at Impeachment Frenzy After Dem’s Profanity-Laced Threat”.
“Frenzy?”
I wondered how long TSA folks would work without getting paid. If the American public starts to miss flights because of 4-hour waits in the security checkpoints, this shutdown will get really unpopular really quickly.
Good, I’m glad.
Every unpaid worker needs to call in sick and not show up.
Good, needs to happen.
Down with the sickness!!!
Ohh ah ah ah ah!
Terrorist incidents will increase by 10 fold.
What Republicans believe doesn’t matter.
What matters is what Putin believes.

Terrorist incidents will increase by 10 fold.
Trump would welcome such a development; it would give him a better excuse for declaring emergency powers (in spite of the 1976 limitations on doing so described a few posts up).
It’s a dangerous situation. Media have a responsibility to emphasize that
[ul]
[li]the Senate voted unanimously to fund the government–yes, Republicans, too;[/li][li]it is Trump’s decision to keep government partially shut down that is making the US less secure; and[/li][li]the Democrats have proposed millions of dollars of spending on border security, even if they are unwilling to fund Trump’s wall slush fund.[/li][/ul]
Say it loud and say it often. Don’t let Trump benefit from the security vulnerabilities he himself is creating.
I wonder if Individual-1 is floating his war powers theory so he can tell Idiots-63,000,000 that he is getting his wall via his special powers? This way he can sign the appropriations bills and “claim” victory.

I could live with that. As things stand, Trump is all too likely to wreck the US economy–the multiplier effects from the unpaid workers will spread out like ripples, and will affect far more people than Trump’s idiot fans imagine. And the specific jobs going undone—security, disease prevention, etc.—have the potential to create even more economy-wrecking.

Something non-Clustery:
Webb famously opposed the 2003 Iraq invasion, and for well-articulated rational reasons.
One wonders what his stance is on the “you broke it, you bought it” principle…

But that’s the thing. Young men having an ‘out’ was a big deal, too, in those days. With all the coffins coming back to US soil week after week after week (we didn’t hide the return of the dead in those days), we were constantly reminded of the true high cost of war. Even someone who had an exemption could not help but be regularly reminded that he was one of the rare lucky ones.
It really was. I was 11 in 1968, but throughout those formative years from age 11-18 (1968-1975), the draft was on the mind of every young male I knew. As Colibri points out, it simply defies credulity that a young man turning 18 in 1968 – the year of the Tet Offensive – would somehow not remember the details surrounding his service – or non-service, as the case may be.
Exactly. Maybe it is something that can be easily explained, but I’m having a hard time coming up with what it could be. I’ll be watching his confirmation hearing, for sure.
Wikipedia gives his birth date as May 23, 1950. And SSS records list his lottery number as 319.

“The National Emergencies Act (Pub.L. 94–412, 90 Stat. 1255, enacted September 14, 1976, codified at 50 U.S.C. § 1601-1651) is a United States federal law passed to stop open-ended states of national emergency and** formalize the power of Congress to provide certain checks and balances on the emergency powers of the President.** The Act of Congress imposes certain procedural formalities on the President when invoking such powers. The perceived need for the law arose from the scope and number of laws granting special powers to the executive in times of national emergency.”
Well, there’s yer problem. Mitch ain’t gonna do shit if it were to happen.

I had to register (1979) but there was no threat of being drafted, so I have no idea what my number was, nor even if I even had a number.
I registered in 1974. Never got a number, but my classification was 1H, which, in hindsight, I presume meant “Stand by. If we decide to hold another lottery, we’ll let you know.”
Or something.

I registered in 1974. Never got a number, but my classification was 1H…*
Woody Allen standup from the 60s:
“I’ve uh, been classified 1-H. In the event of war, I’m a hostage.”

kaylasdad99, thank you for fighting my ignorance. I appreciate you taking the time.
I guess he really did just forget.
Aw, shucks; ‘twarn’t nuthin’…
The average male genitalia is between 5" and 6". However, this invention is designed for those of us who measure longer than that. I estimate that a 12" distance is adequate enough for most well-endowed men, though I would not be surprised if there are cases who need a greater distance. Nevertheless, for the time being, this is a good starting point. An “extra long” [XL] version can always be created if needed.
Jeez, people, you don’t need a special toilet. Just wrap it around your waist a couple of times, like I do.
Trump refers to shutdown as a “strike”.
Many people are working for free, quite the opposite definition of a “strike”.
The reason Russia was in Afghanistan was because terrorists were going into Russia. They were right to be there.
George Schultz is still around. Let’s have him make a public statement explaining why Ronald Reagan was opposed to the Russians being in Afghanistan.
Let Trump say Reagan was wrong. Maybe that will finally shake his supporters out of their blind devotion.

I’ve tried that, but the urethra always gets kinks in it that play holy hell with my ability to consummate a piss.
My eyesight’s as good as I can reasonably expect it to be for my age, but I guess teen-aged self-abuse carries its own consequences…
