I read EP’s post as kidding on the square. To be honest, I’m sure it’s a best practice to quietly vet ambassadors with the countries they’ll be taking up residence in… but in the past I’m pretty sure it was done through channels rather than the Presidents cell.

Yeah I wasn’t originally taking issue with the ‘Putin telling’ part, more l what I saw as a implication that it was the trigger for the resignation, then we ended up in the while reading comprehension nonsense. Such is the way of the pit.

Perhaps I’m naive, but it seemed inappropriate for the POTUS to show up there so he could pose for smiling photographs with medical staff and police officers at a hospital that treated victims of a mass shooting.

(By contrast, this article describes how Obama met the families of the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting, and earlier the families of the children killed at Sandy Hook. He hugged them, listened to them and tried to offer words of condolence. As far as I know, none of this was filmed for use in campaign ads.)

I think its pretty clear why he did it this way. If the press had been there the footage would have included a substantial number of the shooting victims whose unvarnished opinions on the guy who motivated the person who shot them might not have made quite so good a campaign ad.

But…but…the White House is claiming Trump was treated like a “rock star”.

Well, Trump is bringing the neo-Nazis and white nationalist together. There was a quote by some pundit early on in Trump’s term that went something like: “I’m not saying Trump is a racist, but the racists think he’s a racist.” I think he was referring to guys like David Duke and Richard Spencer.

A day of racist comments left him looking small and isolated, while the city united against him.

With no public appearances, the president seemed to shrink, ever more alone as he clung to his white nationalist politics and governance. But he and his supporters were grossly outnumbered. For perhaps the first time in his angry, racist and cruel presidency, the tables were turned in smoldering, righteous popular anger — and he was on the receiving end.

Trump even jabbed a racist poke at El Paso, ridiculing the former Democratic Representative Beto O’Rourke’s Spanish first name, though he is of Anglo descent: “Beto (phony name to indicate Hispanic heritage) O’Rourke, who is embarrassed by my last visit to the Great State of Texas, where I trounced him, and is now even more embarrassed polling at 1% in the Democratic Primary, should respect the victims & law enforcement — & be quiet!”

While it was bad manners for a nation in mourning, it was more than that: It was a fresh dose of racism. In an era in which minorities are becoming majorities, as in Texas, and intermarrying with Anglos, who is Mr. Trump to judge people’s race and ethnicity based on their names?
