Attendees should demonstrate their belief that COVID is a hoax by coughing loudly rather than applause.
I was really surprised when I heard he shifted it. As you say, Juneteenth is the perfect day to give a speech on improving relations. The fact he’s moving it seems to me a tacit admission that his rally is going to be at least a wee bit racist.
I figure there will be a brief acknowledgement of how regrettable George Floyd’s death was (even though he was a habitual lawbreaker), followed by an unhinged rant about the importance of maintaining LAW AND ORDER and attacks on ANTIFA, and how the Trump administration has been the best one ever concerning the rights of African Americans (much better than Lincoln, Johnson, or Obama).
I think the only reason he does anything anymore is VOTES.
There are no acknowledgments, no tacit admissions, nothing about anyone’s rights, or history (of which he knows zero), there’s nothing between the lines, no subtext-- it’s only, ever, and always about VOTES in the 2020 presidential election. Period. No other reason.
Someone (probably Ivanka) told him that if he has it on June 19 he might gain some votes but he will lose more votes than he will gain.
He does things that he thinks (I use the word loosely) will gain him votes, or at least keep the votes of his base. But in the current climate, he’s really bad at evaluating what will get him additional votes.
He’s really bad at evaluating it because it goes entirely against his intrinsically racist nature. Racists gotta racist.
<advisor> “If you make a speech showing you are an empathetic human being that understands the problems of all Americans, no matter what color they are or where they were born, that would get you more votes.”
<Trump> Bwaaaa? I don’t understand what you mean.
<advisor> “Just talk about how every human has value and should be respected.”
<Trump> “Still don’t understand you.”
It all seems so pat, almost as if it’s a “comfort food” sort of thing. He’s long since achieved peak MAGA, which is to say, everybody who would support him already does. He’s extracted all the that ore there is to be had from the earth.
Concurrently, maybe he thinks so, but I just don’t see his base threatening to abandon him if he doesn’t trot out some over-the-top bombast every few days. The monster is already well fed.
Brad Parscale claims that over 300,000 tickets have been given out for the Tulsa rally. For an arena that holds 19,000 people.
Right. This decision by Trump worries me a little. Maybe he is finally realizing that he has the base locked up. If Trump addressed the nation on TV and gave a speech about Floyd and how he understands why people are protesting and that he knows the overwhelming majority of them are peaceful, and that he is commited to working towards improving race relations and police reform, his approval rating would go up 5 points in a week. And he would not lose a single MAGA-hatter.
And if he also said something about the fact that he has strongly disagreed with Democrats about a lot of issues, but he is open to a discussion with them about the issues facing the country, basically pull a Biden about working with the other side, well, we would have four more years.
All this motherfucker wants is to be popular, and he has been too goddamn stupid so far to see how that could happen.
I said I am a little worried, not too much. People don’t change, orangutans even less so.
Reading the tweet about moving the rally off of Juneteenth sounds to me like he had someone tell him it would be bad optics, but he still doesn’t know what Juneteenth IS.
It won’t happen, because it’s not in Trump’s nature.
Trump is basically incapable of ever “doing the right thing,” because it’s against his very nature.
He’s incapable of even recognizing what the right thing is, because to him “the right thing” is always to further the grift and to do what’s best FOR HIM.
Exactly. And even more so if others are telling him it’s the right thing. As soon as someone suggests he do one thing, he has to dig in his heels and refuse and/or do the opposite. Because if he takes anyone’s advice, that means someone else knows more and might even be smarter. Can’t ever let it look that way.
Everything Trump touches turns to shit.
EVERYTHING.
This is unlikely to change now. I think he’s on pace to completely destroy the Republican Party.
Why should the rest of the country celebrate the ending of slavery in Texas? If we’re going to have a national holiday we should make it September 22 or December 18.
But I’ll concede June 19 is generally a better date for a holiday.
It really has nothing to do with Texas. Think of it as the date when slavery ended in America — Texas just happened to be the last to get the word.
The 2 handed sip of water at the West Point speech struck me as odd.
Ooooo… tell us more.
Seriously, I never watch him on TV because I’m old and emotionally fragile and it could kill me. For people who watched and (God help you) listened to him, how did he look/sound? I hate asking you to remember, but I’d be interested in some details. Did all the cadets stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the audience with no masks? Were there any masks in sight?
In about two weeks we can look for a burst of positive COVID tests at West Point, right?
Masked & distanced, but in their cadet unis. Aren’t they commissioned 2nd looeys now?? Wrong uni?? There is also footage of him having a rough time walking down either a ramp or steps looking very unsteady.
