Trump loves Duterte because Duterte has ordered the extrajudicial killing of suspected drug dealers. Extrajudicial executions advance the Republican ideals of small government: no money need be wasted on arrest, trial or, if selling dime bags is not a capital offense, incarceration.
When the ex-PM of Thailand (now himself a fugitive criminal) ran a contest among Governors and Police Chiefs to see who could order the most extrajudicial killings, I hypothesized (since high-ranking police and politicians here tend to be the criminal bosses) that many of the killings were ordered against competitors. The state-sanctioned murder spree forced up the price of meth, which delighted the drug dealers who were “in with the in-crowd.”
And it turns out that the same scenario may be at work with Duterte’s war on drugs. A foreign intelligence source has accused Duterte’s son and son-in-law of being the kingpins of a major ring of crystal meth smugglers. There’s been no conviction or even AFAIK arrest, but the President has urged his son to plead the equivalent of Fifth-Amendment rights and there are huge unexplained bank accounts.
I don’t know how Trump feels about this. I’ll guess Trump’s sons are just too incompetent to be drug kingpins. And Jared’s daddy went to federal prison for noble Republican crimes like witness tampering and financial frauds.
