I’m afraid you are so right. Right along with the concepts of mercy, respecting dignity, basic human decency and taking the high road.
OK, so now, as usual, I’m confused. I thought we went through all this with Japanese-manufactured automobiles in the 1970’s and we all more or less agreed that the market should decide what was most appropriate for its needs (i.e Japanese, European or North American design and manufacture). So it’s different for planes?
Also, just so we’re clear, you feel this proposed tariff is correct and appropriate?

[/QUOTE]Wow. More of this, please!
You do find the best links.
David Pakman yesterday was sort of “speculating” that the decision by Donald Junior to give up Secret Service protection (until he took it back again) just happened to coincide with the arrivals in New York area airports of three Russian oligarchs.
Can you cite ONE instance where causing “sweet, sweet conservative tears” is the reason to do something hideous and not just a side effect of doing the right thing ?
In the 70’s, US auto makers and their bloated marketing department continued to insist that Americans preferred American cars. Their own polls showed this, again and again. Yet somehow the Japanese were eating their lunch, so they needed protection.
Market telling them one thing, marketing department telling them the opposite. Then crying foul instead of changing their damned product. Having lived through that time, I had zero sympathy on all of the auto marketing people and executives that lost their jobs. Overall glad the companies didn’t go away, but a whole lot of people justifiably needed to lose their jobs before the companies got a clue and made the necessary changes.
Not off the top of my head, but I’ll give it some thought.
However…

Human motivations are complicated and often hidden. I’m not sure anyone, on either side, can be said to take a political stance for a single, unambiguous reason.

Can you site a conservative who voted for Trump solely to piss off liberals? Maybe they liked some part of his agenda, or though Hillary would be worse, or whatever, and the “sweet, sweet, liberal tears” are just icing on the cake.

If you’re convinced you’ve done the right thing, why not just leave it at that? Crowing about the “sweet, sweet conservative tears” can only serve to antagonize. Once the knife is in, why twist it?
The chairman of the FCC calls for Apple to activate the FM chips in Apple phones to make them useable during disasters. There are no FM chips in the latest Apple phones.
I gotta call bullshit on this. The piece even includes why it’s bullshit, while still trying to obfuscate: it’s really only one year model, the iPhone 7, that is in circulation that does not have the FM chip. The iPhone 8 just was released days ago, so the fact that it doesn’t have an FM chip is a non-factor: no one has one.
But all the iPhone 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6, 6s, 6 Plus… yeah, they all have the FM chip.
So this whole opening of that piece:
is weaksauce (and they themselves falsify that last sentence, immediately before it appears). There’s plenty of fucked-uppedness to note in how badly Puerto Rico is getting treated right now, but this ain’t that.
“Everyone will have jam tomorrow. The best jam. Believe me.”
Eh, what I want to know is the story behind the story (i.e. who promised Pai a sweet sinecure in exchange for this position and what’s in it for them).
Even if the answer is yes, the Trump administration has made it clear that it intends to move forward with protectionism. Trump may be ushering a new age in which countries stop cooperating with each other and view each other as intensely competitive rivals. Once we start down that road, it’s hard to reverse because nationalism in the United States will almost surely fuel nationalism in future elections, such as in Germany, France, the UK, Japan, and elsewhere. When access to markets and resources gets choked off by the collapse of economic cooperation, then access has to be obtained through more forceful means.
Unless there’s some secret code signal that Apple can broadcast to to all the iPhone 4 to 6’s to say “FM! Be Activated!” I don’t really see why that makes the article bullshit. Any activation of FM radio chips would have to be in the phones that are in the factories right now being constructed - surely. (And wouldn’t be much use to Irma victims. Maybe the *next *hurricane)
Two words: Software. Update.
As I understand it, the FM chips aren’t even hooked up to anything. Their presence is a side effect of using commodity parts. A software update wouldn’t be able to do anything.
“And I will have TWO jars of jam right now!”
Huh. That is interesting.
Just download the IHeart Radio app. Duh.
