A semi-serious proposal, based on Trump’s statement that the knowledge that some teachers may be armed would be a deterrent:

Every school in America posts a sign that says “Teachers on this campus may be armed.” And that’s it…no actual guns. So there’s a tiny possibility that a shooting may be deterred, at zero risk of mis-use or mishandling of firearms.

That would be like putting a bull’s-eye on every teacher’s back. A gunman walks into a school, sees a sign that teachers may be armed, and his first thought will be, “take out the teachers first.” Spectacularly stupid and irresponsible idea.

Australia has stricter immigration policies than the U.S., and Mr. Trump said he wants to mimic that. He praised the “merit-based” immigration system of the land down under. Mr. Trump said he hopes members of Congress are listening.

President Trump says we’d be better off with an immigration system based on merit. He’s right — but it’s not clear that he understands everything merit-based actually means.

Today’s proponents of a merit-based fix to immigration didn’t invent the idea. In fact, it’s been on the U.S. negotiating table for years and other countries rely heavily on merit-based systems. They work, and not because the merit-based approach installs some kind of punitive purity test as the price of admission. It’s not one-dimensional and it doesn’t limit recruiting to one continent or country (Norway, say). Instead, merit-based immigration serves a clear economic purpose — attracting and welcoming people with a wide range of skills, all tailored to a country’s economic needs.

The White House likes to praise Canada’s merit-based immigration system, to cite one example. Yes, America would do well to emulate Canada — but not for reasons the president talks about.

Teachers with guns: maybe some proponents of this criminally insane idea are picturing some sort of 1950s sitcom “school” set, with a teacher standing at the front of the room and students neat and orderly in their rows of desks.

But the reality is kids swarming around teachers in hallways (teachers are required to stand out there to supervise) and in classrooms (because the old ‘neat rows of desks’ paradigm is very rare, nowadays. You have kids milling around and doing projects and sitting at big tables, and the teacher moving around right next to them).

Kids swarming around armed teachers are going to be in easy reach of that gun in that holster.

Hands up if you believe no kid will grab one of those guns…anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

DHS deputy head Elaine Duke to leave Trump administration

Elaine Duke, the No. 2 official at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is stepping down from her post in the Trump administration.

Duke is leaving the Trump administration after serving in the federal government for nearly three decades, under both Republican and Democratic presidents.

During her time as the top DHS official starting in late July, Duke oversaw the department’s response to a series of hurricanes that devastated parts of Texas, Louisiana and Florida, as well as U.S. territories in the Caribbean.

Duke came under fire, however, after she suggested that the federal response to Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico, was a “good news story.”

Duke also reportedly faced pressure from Kelly, who urged her in November to deport thousands of Hondurans residing in the U.S. after DHS extended temporary protected status for the residents.

According to a Washington Post report, that episode angered Duke, who refused to reverse the decision to extend the residency permits.

I’m pretty sure that doing so will be ruled unconstitutional as soon as the ACLU or the Freedom From Religion people file suit in the appropriate courts. And I hope that when it is, the judge writing the majority statement lays into them for being useless, pandering, spineless, whimpering idiots.
