In the past 8 years: gay marriage became legal, LGBTQ rights rose to the forefront, race has become a national dialogue, as has pay equity and gun control. Even religion itself is under attack. Keep in mind, America is the stagnant backwater when it comes to these issues when compared to the rest of the first world.
They will not beat back the tide but I think they’re just glad to get a bit of respite before they are drowned by the next progressive wave. Trump is the flotsam they cling to while they take their last gasping breaths.
I don’t really have anything to add to this. I just wanted to quote it because it’s the first thing I’ve read in months that’s given me any hope at all - a perspective I hadn’t considered before - and I hope like hell you’re right.
Trump isn’t going to get re-elected. The only reason he scraped by the first time was because of demoralization and apathy of the liberals and moderates, which isn’t going to be repeated should he run for re-election. So the only real question regarding Trump’s fate in the next election is whether he’ll last long enough to see it.
Which I think he will. All claims that evidence of any kind could change the minds of his remaining supporters -which includes the politicians who could impeach him- strikes me as charming naivete.
I think it very likely Trump is impeached; much less likely that he’s convicted. Here’s my crystal ball reading:
Democrats chances of re-taking the House are looking quite good indeed. Impeachment proceedings will begin in January.
Mueller’s findings will also hit around then, and indictments of everyone Trump knows will follow.
The Senate will remain in Republican hands.
The impeachment trial will result in an acquittal, but probably just barely. A handful of Republican senators will vote to convict, but it’ll fall short of the 60 votes necessary.
The last 2 years of the Trump Administration will be a series of House hearings, and absolutely no legislation being passed.
Trump will make a feeble attempt at running for re-election but will see the handwriting on the wall by the time New Hampshire primary rolls around.
I agree with all of this. Trump has 30 million fawning retards, but he also had a golden moment that can never be repeated…unless the democrats run a candidate as bad or worse than Hillary.
You know what is probably on the Trump video in Russia? Cheeto screaming at some hookers to piss on Obama’s bed, if not on himself. The 30 million mouth-breathers will love it, but it will turn off the independents. I hope it comes out.
The only point I’d argue with is that religion is under attack. People don’t have a problem with genuine religion. What’s under attack is a political ideology that’s pretending to be a religion. A lot of what claims to be Christianity in America nowadays has nothing to do with anything Jesus Christ ever said.
I’d like to believe this. But I never imagined that Trump would get elected in 2016. So I won’t dismiss the possibility of him getting re-elected in 2020.
Religion is under attack in the sense that Christianity is no longer the unassailable norm that is presumed to go unchallenged by all. There are many who take that loss of societal status and protection personally.
Neither will I. His fan base doesn’t seem pissed off at all. More likely, they’ll defend him. Even if they prove he’s worth negative 200 million bucks, they’ll blame Obama again. Most who voted for him will just say, “Eh. We didn’t get the wall, but, eh.”
Presuming everything goes normally (read: The RNC doesn’t run a different republican alongside him), virtually all the people who voted for Trump the first time would vote for him again. (What are they going to do - vote democrat? Stay home?) The difference would be that you wouldn’t find as many democrats and moderates staying home. Say what you will about him, Trump has generated a lot of interest in how our country is run at the presidential level. You’re going to see a lot less shrugging. And Trump desperately needs decent people to do nothing if he wants to be elected, both the first time and on any future re-ups.
