Scott Pruitt wanted to use emergency lights and sirens to get through DC traffic when he was late for an appointment. The security guy in charge said that was against rules. Two weeks later, the security guy was replaced. His replacement is the guy who claims that Pruitt has to fly first class and sit near the front of planes because of security issues.
Just on the basis of his policies, Scott Pruitt may be the worst member of the administration (Betsy de Vos would give him a run for his money). But throw in bullshit like the above and there’s no contest.
ETA: Why the hell does he even ride in a vehicle with lights and sirens? What constitutes an EPA emergency?
So Trump has said that the National Guard would be deployed at the border “until we get a wall.” Sounds an awful lot like he’s using them as hostages.
The Governor of Oregon said she would not authorize the use of the Oregon National Guard for border defense. I don’t know what the President has to do to nationalize the Guard, but has he done this with their use at the border?
I will freely admit to ignorance as to how the National Guard works. I thought they’re at the state level – under direction of the governor, and working within their home state? Seeing as how Oregon doesn’t have a border…how would the Oregon Guard wind up near Mexico?
I thought he was only using the National Guard from border states?
The President can nationalize the Guard to put them under Pentagon control instead of state level. I know that happened during the Arkansas school desegregation problem under Eisenhower. The Governor refused to use the Guard to protect the black students, so the President did it. I don’t know if only the Guard units from border states will be used, or not.
Looks like she is pre-emptively saying no, even before she is asked, if in fact she would be.
If they’re nationalized, do they get paid by the feds?
An excellent point. I hope so; and I hope the funds come out of that $1.3B for border security that was just included in the omnibus spending bill.
They do.
I thought that nationalizing was a Commie thing.
They can be sent to missions abroad as well.
CNN reports that Trump has mused this week about firing Sessions and replacing him with Swampdweller Scott Pruitt, who is under fire for multiple (and quite egregious) ethical lapses.
WTF. Pruitt really ought to be fired for taking a sweetheart deal on cheap living quarters in a lobbyist’s home, and giving his staffers huge raises. Instead Trump is thinking about promoting him. :smack:
By wagon train.
Simply declare that California is just the southern counties of Oregon. We could call it Baja Oregon.
(Gets rid of two pesky Democratic senators as well.)
On the SDMB, the answers to our questions are often just a post or two away…
It’s a dictator thing. You can’t be a dictator on your own–you need support from guys who are highly motivated to keep supporting you, and fear alone won’t do it. You need the carrot was well as the stick, and nationalizing things and then handing them to your newly-minted oligarchs is the way to ensure devotion to your continued rule.
That occurred to me (too) after I’d logged off. But hey, there could be worse uses of their time!
