So, how best to reach those people? I don’t think the answer is to back them into a corner and force them to grovel and ask forgiveness from the rest of us. They won’t. They’ll resent you for rubbing their noses in it and come out swinging. People need a face-saving way out, and your chance of getting an apology is better if you don’t demand it.

I feel confident that the so-called arrogant attitudes of the educated classes did not *cause *people to become brainwashed fascist followers of a bloated impulsive narcissist who never saw corruption or sleaze he didn’t want to wallow in. That’s just too big a leap.
It may not help to view this development with aghast anger and bewilderment, but that’s a reaction, not a cause.
When people believe in and act upon premises that are horribly cruel and also insane lies, what are you supposed to do? Meet halfway? Hold them in your arms and not allow them to scratch until they realize they are helplessly in your power? Um, what?
How do you reason with people who still vote for a guy like Donald Trump or Eric Greitens? People who rationalize these kinds of daily outrages and assaults on long-held social and political norms? Yes, I guess I fully subscribe to the fact that it is us against them, particularly when “them” are the people who stubbornly live in a world of alternative facts. There’s no way to have even a basic conversation with people who live in an alternative reality.
Sorry but trying to “understand” these people is impossible. I don’t want to understand or get along with them. I want them to grow the fuck up and start thinking like rational adults.

They don’t always seem to give you a choice in the matter. A big issue I have with those on the right is their tendency to see things as black and white.
So yes, if you are not placating them, if you are not bowing and scraping and giving the greatest of deference to them and their ideas, then you are deliberatly antagonizing them.
